Would this help a pony who bucks and broncs while bring led?

The Dually Halter can make leading more challenging equines easier. We advise watching the DVD that you will receive with it to ensure you and your horse get the best from the product. Please note that young horses can be more sensitive than an older horse. Take time to introduce him/her to the feel, ask elastically and incrementally. It is always recommended to sort the advice of a veterinarian to rule out pain and discomfort before proceeding. Remember you have the Dually Halter on your horse as a training aid (as an alternative to a bridle, a chifney, a lunge cavesson, a flat halter, rope halter with knots or a halter with a chain over the nose). The reason you are using the Dually is because it won’t damage or desensitise your horse’s mouth, it doesn’t dig in anywhere or work on very sensitive areas of the horse’s face, it doesn’t use excessive poll pressure and fitted correctly it won’t slip around the horse’s face so you gain more accuracy and control of the horse with less compression than most other options . 'Fitted correctly' is the key phrase here. If you don't take the time to fit the dually correctly, then it will not work the way that's intended. It is best to take a little extra time getting the fit exactly right if you really want the Dually to help give you excellent results with your horse. It might take a little while to get used to it needing to go a little higher than you would fit a standard headcollar. This is because the Dually Halter is NOT intended to work on the soft part of the nose. In fact, the up-per nose band part should nearly reach the bottom of the horse’s cheek-bone to be in the correct position. To fit it this high sometimes it is necessary to undo not only the band across the nose but also the band underneath the chin, fit the Dually high enough by adjusting the headpiece and then do the two lower bands up to secure the Dually firmly but not tightly on the horse’s face. A rough guide would be to ensure you can place two fingers in any section of the Dually and the horse can relax his jaw, but still the Dually won’t slip around on the horse’s eye if pressure is applied on the line from any angle. If you are worried your horse or pony is very sensitive you may wish to purchase a natural sheepskin guard (available from the Intelligent Horsemanship Shop) to go over the acting part of the noseband. This is generally not necessary but horses that are long lined off the Dually with strong changes of direction could conceivably get rubbed and so this would be an option. Remember you NEVER tie a horse up using the schooling ring of the Dually Halter. This is because if the horse pulls back the schooling ring will continue to tighten across his face and could damage his face. It should be noted even on a normal halter, tying a horse to somewhere with no safety break can result in a damaged poll and broken neck and no horse should be tied up until he has been taught how to lead and to tie. Horses should never be loose in a stable or field with a Dually (or anything other than a 'fieldsafe headcollar') in case they get caught up in anything. If you wish to travel your horse in a Dually as many people do, just ensure you tie up to the correct (non schooling) ring and that there is nothing in the horsebox that the other rings could get caught up in. If your horse is going to eat hay on his journey (recommended) it is advisable to loosen the Dually off under the chin a few holes so he can move his jaw comfortably. The rings on the Dually will bend or even break under extreme pressure but this should not be relied upon. The Dually Halter is not sold as ‘breakable' and 'fieldsafe' as it for the most part training and safety equipment.

Will this fit a Dartmoor 12 hands pony?

Hi, I think that would be too big for a 12hh pony. The Red (Small) fits my ponies that range from 13.3 to 15hh. I think you would need the Green one. Sizes from a U.K. official supplier state: The smallest which is the mini would fit a foal or miniature Shetland, extra small would fit a Welsh Section A or Shetland to a 13hh pony with a finer head, small would fit is a 13 hh pony going up to a 15.2 hh with a smaller head. The medium would fit from 14 hh Big Head to a finer 16.2 hh

can you buy a monty roberts dually dvd separately?

I do not think so. I might have one sculling around. I will look. I have every size. They really do work.

Great tool

Really good quality, very adjustable to get the right fit and IT WORKS! Watch the DVD or some of Monty Roberts or Kelly Marks YouTube videos and you get the full benefit of how to use it. I have a bolshy 2 year old hill bred Fell filly, who came to me halter broken but essentially unhandled. This has helped teach her manners- in the space of a week I have gone from mud skiing n behind her and being catapulted out of the stable to having a quiet, calm, responsive pony walking alongside me. Long may this continue 🙌

Bloody brilliant, although maybe slightly small...

My Section D and my 14.3 fine bred mare have both responded to this beautifully, but it only just fits them. It’s very adjustable so I’d say go for the larger size if you’re unsure. That said, I only need it for these two and it fits them both, albeit on the biggest setting. I’ve wondered if my Section D might be a rig - he still has a very stallionish way about him and we got him as a rescue at about 6, but it’s given him much better yard and in hand manners. I rode the mare in it, for the first time in nearly a year (instead of her usual bitted bridle) and she went beautifully.

After reading various reviews regarding the loading of stubborn horses I took the decision to buy one . What would normally be an hours hard work trying to load my stubborn mare now takes no more than 10 minutes , the Monty Roberts dually head collar really is that good

This red (small) halter doubles for training our yearling as a bridle (side pull) while using long lines. This size will not fit her head much longer and I'll have to move to the next size up soon. We've used the larger sizes of this halter as side pull bridles during therapeutic riding lessons. When adjusted correctly, this "halter" does not shift on the horse's head toward the eye, as we've struggled with using other side pull bridles. Additionally, it is very useful to be able to have a horse leader hooked on to the halter while the client uses the rein rings as well. We find this a GREAT tool and wonder how we got by so long without it.

My nearly wild mustang had had some prior training briefly and had been taught to avoid contact by backing up until couldn't back anymore ( long time ) then freeze and handle the contact. With much patients, timing, and this dually halter my little mustang is learning to just stand still and enjoy human contact. Much easier than backing. Thank You
