My 8 yr old is just in a size 2 boys shoe. what size should i get?

Please get the 8-12 years size. They are nice and snug and keeps the feet warm without overheating or itching. My son loved them when we went camping. Now that the weather is cool (Arizona), he wears them at home to walk around and sleep in.

Is it too warm for summer hiking?

Not at all. You can use it in Al weather. It keeps you warm but not uncomfortable.

Would these be too thick/warm for summer hikes?

Warm and toasty feet with these merino wool socks! Took the kids to lapland and these worked a treat. Even in minus 30 our feet were still nice and warm! Great value, good quality. Size is true and colours are nice. Well recommended.
