a writer imprisoned, then living in exile
I was moved by one of Afghanistan's poets imprisoned and not allowed to have pen, paper or the Holy Koran, fearful that his family had been imprisoned, also. He wrote on the walls of his jail cell with a piece of coal; his guard washed it off to keep from getting in trouble. All these years later, Ustad Khalili's voice resounds through these memoirs, thanks to Al and Marie.

Extraordinary Reading
"Memoirs of Khalilullah Khalili" relays memories of Afghan writer, philosopher, historian and statesman Professor Ustad Khalilullah Khalili. Professor Khalili authored more than seventy works of poetry, fiction, histories and Sufi studies. The memoirs are vivid and human, evoking a sense of connection between cultures and individuals even amidst political extremism and violence. These memoirs educate and elucidate. Highly recommend.

Learning more about a culture
This is not normally a genre I read; however, I learned so much about Afghan culture and history and feel that I've come away with a far better understanding of how history unfolded and the general insights into the mind of Ustad Khalili. Thank you for sharing his memoirs.
