How long can this root fertilizer last?

Generally, these spikes last for 2-3 months. However, the replacement frequency can vary depending on the plant type and aquarium conditions

If the substrate is shallow, less than 1.6 inches, how should I use it?

There are two methods: You can place it horizontally instead of vertically. Or you can trim it shorter and use it.

When should I start using this root fertilizer?

Generally, after aquatic plants have grown for a while, the nutrients in the soil begin to deplete and need replenishing. Alternatively, start using the fertilizer if you notice your plants becoming slightly yellow or wilted.
