Three types of 1800's boiler glass are featured in this Lake Michigan key ring. Produced in boilers of steam ships and foundries, then dumped as a waste product into the lakes over 100 years ago, these colorful pieces of glass now wash up on shore as a collectible reminder of the lakes' history and industrial significance. The pebbles included in this key ring have been collected directly from Lake Michigan by the artist, and set in a square tray on a 1-inch key ring. Care was taken to showcase the materials as they appear when found. The stones were left in their natural state, and covered with a durable glaze to make the piece appear wet, as if waves were still lapping over it. The stones featured in this key ring are: Leland Blue, a unique blue glass formed as a byproduct of a short-lived attempt to smelt iron on Michigan's Leelanau peninsula, and two colors of steam ship boiler glass, formed in the boilers of ships traversing the lake. The key ring measures approximately 1 inch by 2.25 inches. It arrives packaged in a gift box.
