A brilliant piece of nostalgia
I love ‘Script for a Jester’s Tear’ but sadly never got to see Marillion play back in the early 80’s, which was odd because back then l was a regular visitor to Hammersmith Odeon, the dream venue for all up and coming metal and rock bands (Iron Maiden played four nights there a month after this concert and my ticket cost £4!!). I was delighted to get hold of this brilliant piece of nostalgia, it took me right back to that era. It’s over 35 years old but the songs are still a delight to hear, delivered by the brilliant Fish. And look at the fans all clad in leather/denim jackets; amazing how Marillion captured that metal audience back then, we all bought in to it; you never saw people dressed like that at a Genesis gig!

Great Stuff
Watched this last night and my first reaction was the quality of the soundtrack. Excellent - and that's what matters the most with a music DVD.Secondly, I can't believe just how good a voice Fish had in those days. Having just watched his DVD from 2005 (Return to Childhood) where he was all over the place vocally, this is a treasure indeed.Lastly, although the musicianship of all involved was exemplary, you can't help feeling that Fish was totally the creative force and charisma behind Marillion as the other band members look far to dull and serious (and still do) which explains why the camera is 90% of the time focused on the lead singer.Marillion died after Fish left as far as i'm concerned, and this is a great DVD to remind you of a time that they were in their creative ascendency. Check out "Live from Lorelei" on DVD aswell if you to want to hear music from the other three Fish/Marillion albums played live or even if you just want to see how much weight a rock star can put on in four years!Oh yeah, and if anyone can explain the significance of the rubber plant, please let me know.

One of the best live DVDs out there...
As you can see, I like this DVD. It's not just full of great songs but they're also performed well by one of my favourite bands. I bought this to replace my old VHS copy that one of my Dad's mates had given to me because that had worn out. I was going to buy this anyway really because it has the whole concert, not just a bit of it.For almost all of the time, the camera is focusing on lead singer Fish and captures all of his fluid stage moves and theatrical mannerisms. However, we do get to see the other members who were/are all equally important in the Marillion sound at the time. The DVD extras aren't really that great but that's not why you should buy this DVD. You should buy this for the performances of 'Forgotten Sons' and 'Grendel' both capture the audience with costumes and thought-provoking lyrics. If you like this I would also recomend watching the 'Live from Loreley' DVD. While it is not as good it has a greater variety of songs (as it was recorded 4 years later) and shows them near the end of their golden age.

At last, the complete prog picture!
It's been many years since I last watched my old VHS version of this and since then I never did manage to catch sight of it's 'sister' footage - the two track VHS of The Web and Grendel. Little did I know they were from the same gig! Here they are, reunited at last as the complete gig they were meant to be, and the mystery of the soil on Fish's shirt is solved! This is Marillion at their most prog-entrenched - the whole of the debut LP plus the epic Grendel and debut single Market Square Heroes. Yes it's been said they were Genesis clones and there's more than a touch of Peter Gabriel about Fish's on stage posturings and characterisations, but then we all knew that! The extras are worth a look - some Marquee footage gives the impression of a very crowded stage, so you can see why the Hammersmith footage was chosen for the release.Well packaged with colour photos I've never seen before at a nice price too - a must for any Marillion fan!

Soundtrack to my teens.
Had this originally on VHS, and it's probably still in the loft somewhere although the player itself has long since expired. Such a great walk down memory lane which echoes a time when each Saturday involved a trip into town to purchase a new vinyl with hard earned paper round money. Not nearly as polished as the Loreley festival DVD which was post Kayleigh, this very much captures a band stepping into the spotlight for the first time. Crazy hair and fashions abound, and that's just the audience. Sadly post Fish Marillion have obliterated their style with their wish to stay current.Buy it, you won't be disappointed unless you're a Hogarth apologist.

Halcyon Days!
This was Marillion at the moment they started on their journey to stadium filling chart toppers. Always deeply unfashionable, the bucked every trend of the day and defied all logic to become as massive as they did. The reason can only be their mesmerising music, supreme musicianship and astonisging talents and character of frontman Fish. This concert takes place during their first major headline tour in support of debut album Script For a Jester's Tear and showcases the whole album (six epic songs)as wel as the bonus of an apparently unplanned encore of the 17-minute masterwork 'Grendel'. To have been along for the ride at this stage in the band's career would have been very special.
