The Complete Guide to Light & Lighting in Digital Photography

Very good resource
This book was recommended by an instructor, and I am glad to have it on my bookshelf. One reviewer blasted it for not dealing well with problem situations, and giving advice on correcting them. There are formulas to lighting, and there is a bit of science to it, but problems come up, and it takes a little trial and error and experience to deal with them. Maybe there are some gleamingFreeman's book is an excellent resource for most of what you need to have as a foundation for understanding and working with photographic lighting. I personally like how it is laid out, and I find the different topics very helpful. He covers a lot of ground, and if I want a refresher on positioning a main light, dealing with mixed lighting, shooting at various times of day, creating HDR images, etc., then I pull this off the shelf.I read a lot of photography books, and I don't have one that stands out as head and shoulders above the rest. If someone has a suggestion, let me know. But, I do find this book very useful. I just have to concur with other reviewers about typos and production errors. Typos, omitted words, errant photo captions seem to be common among publishers of photography books. I try to ignore them now.

Yes, shoot the editor.
I agree strongly with the first review of this book. I bought this one and a wedding photo book. Reading this one has been a much better use of my time! It takes a more scientific and pragmatic approach to successful photography. Light is what you are capturing and the essence of photography. One should really know something about it :) I really like the series shots towards the back of the book that include a bust, a ball and a figurine with different light treatments (reflectors, angles, blah blah blah). He also does series shots of the same objects only with different exposures, different times of day and different lighting setting, which helps you get a better understanding of white balance and how to use it to your advantage. It shows progressive evening to night shots. I do wish it had more night shooting tips, but it was well worth the $30. He uses a Nikon D2X, I believe, which might make the Nikon users feel a bit more comfortable, but really this info applies to all digital SLRs out there. He also touches on photoshop and photomatrix.

Great book, needs editing
This is a great book, with lots of good ideas for how to set up lighting in differing situations. I've already improved my lighting using ideas from this book. What made this a tough slog is that the illustrations sometimes don't match up, and for a photography book, the illustrations tend to be kind of important. I went on the publisher web site, and haven't found an errata, but will keep looking in the hopes, since cleaning up the figures (and adding the missing ones obviously referred to) would make this a great overall book.

A good book, IMO
I bought this book based on web research. I have no regret; it's very good. It presents and describes techniques and equipment, as well as basic physics of light. I've learned from it just by reading, and I intend to use it as a reference, among others (one of which I've already got and read). I can't imagine anyone being other than well pleased if they bought this book.

A comprehensive text well written
Much of the information in this book was already known to me; but the author presents it in an orderly and structured way that makes it seem more useful. Even though it was written in 2006, what is presented are fundamentals and still useful even though some of the specifics are out-of-date because of the fast moving underlying technology. This was the text recommended for a course on illumination for digital photography by a local arts college.

This book is chock full of interesting lighting ideas. Complete with why and how to achieve the desired effects and diagrams to help you achieve excellent results. If you are a student of portraiture, you too may find this book a go to.

Lots of good information on Photographic lighting
This is a very good book on Lighting for photography. In some places it gets a little technical, but some people may want all that information. I just want to know the best ways to light situations, from what angles, etc.thanks.
