Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Brilliant Technical Achievement - Doesn't Capture The Spirit of The Original Book
This is a gorgeous looking movie and the production and photography are first rate. I was dismayed by the Nazi element del Torro introduced as well as Geppetto's maudlin inability to move on from the death of his son. The scene with Pinocchio dancing for Mussolini and the off color bathroom humor that followed was a distraction and unnecessary. This latest version really doesn't surpass the charm and enchantment of the original Disney film with it's spectacular hand drawn animation and timeless classic storyline. Disney's film captures the spirit of Collodi's book more effectively.

Beautiful edition of a beautiful animated film
My wife and I are big fans of the current crop of stop-motion animated films. We managed to see this film when it was briefly out in theaters and loved it. Happy to have access to it on Netflix, but this was one for our collection, so we bought it. The video and audio quality of the film are spectacular, in my opinion, and the extras on the disc make for a great look into the making of the film. The accompanying booklet is gorgeous as well, making this a must have for fans of the movie and genre.

One of the most translated stories in the world and the right for physical media
Currently one of the best adaptations to Collodi's novel, a little dark but just enough to be suitable for children. There's a reason why Pinocchio is one of the most translated novels in human history, it's a universal lesson of what it means to be human and to define the difference between good and evil.I would say this Criterion edition is worth buying due to Guillermo Del Toro being one of the few directors supporting physical media. We are in era where business is aiming for digital media to dominate the market. As a victim of losing rights to digital products in the past, physical media is still the strongest form of holding onto property that you rightfully paid for; please support this cause.

Best Pinocchio
This movie flew under the radar because there was a couple movies with the same title out at almost the same time. Del Toro’s is definitely the one to get! Great story and the stop motion is perfect! Grab this in 4k definitely worth the price Amazon has it on sale.

Couldn’t be better
Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022) is remarkable. Turns out stop motion animation has also come along since… the seventies?First of all, it is del Toro through and through. Every scene is just slightly tainted by his dark vision. It’s set in fascist Italy and some sequences might have come from Bertolucci. The first half hour crashes through death, religion, morality, loss, grief… His Pinocchio is unbearably cheerful about everything in a confoundingly refreshing way. Once again he smashes childhood into the face of the grimmest realities of wartime fascism. The musical numbers here are so astonishing to watch… One is lost in the lighting and sound editing. Its elegance is enchanting. The voice acting is incredible… Ewan McGregor, SWINTON, Christoph Waltz, Ron Perlman… The monkey is played by Cate Blanchet! The wooden boy is played by young Gregory Mann, and he’s really exceptional. The song Ciao Papa is actually stunning. His direction sets a new standard for child actors. It really does. When the dreaded figure of Mussolini finally appears, he is shorter that most of the children and almost spherically obese. It is the finest appearance of Il Duce since Fellini’s Amarcord (1973).If somehow you let this film slide when it came out, it’s really worth seeking out. The Criterion edition is naturally fantastic. I can’t wait for the whole second disc of extras.

Guillermo del Toro's best film in years - Gorgeous packaging from Criterion
I bought the 4K combo pack. Even the regular blu-ray has a gorgeous transfer. The packaging is gorgeous, with a beautiful poster by James Jean for the slipcase, and the case itself has artwork of Pinocchio and a long nose inside. There's a booklet with two essays, production photos, and concept art. With a decent amount of bonus features. (strangely no audio commentary was included, which is kind of unusual, since most del Toro films have audio commentary tracks)Pinocchio had a limited theatrical run and was released by Netflix. I recently cancelled my subscription, so I'm glad I have a copy of this film on hand. Discs are still the best way to enjoy films at home! It's also nice to see some more animation in the Criterion Collection. GKIDS has the rights to the entire Studio Ghibli library, and half of Satoshi Kon's filmography, so when it comes to the obvious candidates, other distributors have the rights to the kind of animation that Criterion would be interested in releasing.

Hermosa película, limitado a inglés solamente.
