I work with heavy material (canvas). I'm concerned that this machine will handle the weight. I don't need the knife to cut the material, I do need to know that it will stitch properly. Thanks for the information.

No it won't work with heavier material it knocks mine out of timing with 2 layers of knit 

Does this machine have a free arm to sew sleeve openings?

No it does not have a free arm.

Is there a cording or piping foot?

Hi, mine only came with the presser foot. I believe this is standard for this model; the piping foot is available from any Janome dealer (or here, on Amazon).

Is the needle plate supposed to be not flush on one side?

Mine is flush with the plastic so you might have a defective one. Too bad you can't attach a photo.
