Horizons 2nd Grade Math Teacher's Guide

It's a 2-book set, so be sure you get both books
This spiral-bound version was great, as it allows me to open the book all the way when I grade my kids' workbooks. The seller should have been clear that he/she was shipping me book 2 only of a two-book set. I had forgotten that I'd ordered this, and purchased the two-book set from a local used bookstore. When this one arrived, I decided to keep it, because of the great spiral binding. But it is JUST book 2.Book 1 includes a discussion about how to use the curriculum, which is good, because these workbooks -- also a two-book set -- are only partially effective when used on their own. You really need the teacher workbook. Some of the instructions are vague or non-existent without the discussion and explanation from the Teacher Edition. Book 1 also includes a readiness evaluation, thoughts on how to prepare a lesson, all the skills taught in the course and the sequence in which they are taught, a list of manipulatives -- such as flash cards, base 10 blocks, number line, etc. -- and which lessons they're needed for, a topical index, and a timeline of when the concepts appear during the school year. This is followed by 160 detailed lessons.Book 2 contains answer sheets for the Student Edition books, plus additional worksheets (for students who need a little extra practice), and answer sheets to THOSE worksheets. That's it. If you purchase just Book 2, you will not have the most valuable part of the Teacher Edition. That said, if you purchase the set, consider purchasing the spiral-bound set. It's just easier to work with. One of the reasons I purchased the Horizons Math books was that they give you a lot of exercises and problems on a page. That might seem like a trivial reason to choose a math curriculum, but take a good look at the inside pages of most 2nd grade workbooks. You mostly get lots of white space, great splashes of color, 24-point type, enormous drawings, and only 3 or 4 exercises per page. Sometimes less. What a waste of paper and money. I supposed children enjoy the feeling of completing a page, and parents enjoy the feeling that their young student just blew through a workbook, but really, I wanted more meat.Once I read the methodology for teaching math in the Horizons program, I was quite impressed. It's thorough, with just the right amount of repetition at just the right intervals. There is variety on the page, but also enough practice to achieve fluency and comfort with the subject. Graphically, it's appealing, but not silly. My second-grader is memorizing Shakespeare and reading the Bible. He really doesn't want dot-to-dot airplanes in his workbook.

Be aware, you may not be receiving what you think you are.
I guess it depends on who your seller is if you purchase this used, but most people are not receiving what the description and product picture describes. The description states that you will be receiving part one and two, which gives you the impression that you receive both the answer key with the worksheets and the instructors notes for both books. I only received the book two, Which has the answers and worksheets for both books, not the course notes for them. If you want notes and details on how to teach you will want to purchase the first book. The product description picture is wrong because it has a picture of book one and it is the new version. I received the old version of the book two. As far as the actual product goes, I am very happy with horizons math two curriculum. The picture and product description desperately need to be changed, though!

Great curriculum
We absolutely love horizons. It’s the best math curriculum we have used. It’s so colorful and engaging. It’s perfect for my daughter, who needs short and to the point lessons. It has just the right amount of repeat mastered material through the curriculum for a confidence boost.

Totally Thrilled
Love this program. New concepts are introduced in a straightforward, easy to understand manner. But the best thing is that each new concept has eight to 12 problems and then the last concept is reviewed for six to eight problems, and then an earlier concept is reviewed for four to six problems and then another concept is reviewed for a couple of problems. This is the same format each day, but with different concepts being reviewed so that math is actually FUN!

Horizons 1-3 is great, I don't recommend 4th grade
Horizons 1-3 is great, I don't recommend 4th grade , It was written by a different author than 1-3rd grade and it is terrible and I am not exaggerating when I say that. We wasted a year using it and then switched to Saxon. Love Saxon.

Really do not like this teachers guide
Really do not like this teachers guide. I think the worst part is you have to photo copy so many activity sheets...why not just put them in the workbook???
