Wall kit installation-rating on functionality not on construction
I began by purchasing the Ideal Pet Products 15-by-23.5-Inch Super-Large Ruff-Weather Pet Door with Telescoping Frame. This was for new construction through an exterior wall. I didn't initially purchase the wall kit because I couldn't think of a reason why I needed it. I just thought I would frame it myself and deal with the gap between the telescoping components of the door. This is what I learned. I framed it fine, the gap was present, and it would have been fine except....the frame was wood, I took a look at the gap and immediately had visions of the dirt and water that would gather there as the dogs came and went. Then it made sense, pay the $40.00 for the plastic wall kit. I thought that it would keep everything clean and that it would be easy to keep clean, just wipe up any water and dirt left during the entry/exit process. Wood on the other hand would absorb the water and become stained from the dirt.As I said, mine was for new construction. I trimmed the exterior and interior so the door unit was secured on the trim on both sides. The door has a nice seal, and the trim provides a smooth service, a small bead of caulk doesn't hurt either. Trim is not only important for a smooth tight seal, and aesthetics, it also provides width for those of you who may be worried about shortening the bolts others have bemoaned in their reviews. To finish the project I used window/door great stuff to fill in the space between the frame and wall kit, caution--this is the last step after the door is in, secure, and ready for use. The plastic wall kit is so flimsy the great stuff would easily collapse the kit.The kit itself, cheap plastic and not really worth $40.00. But, it fits the pet door nicely. Over all it serves its purpose very well. Could you make your own? Probably, but by the time you are done doing that, well it is your time.Installation: OK, the gripes about the length of the bolts. Of course longer is better because you can't add length to a bolt. If you need to shorten a bolt it is relatively easy. Measure your length carefully, screw two nuts on the bolt and secure at the desired length. Tighten both together so they lock, use the outer nut as a guide/straight edge for your hacksaw. If you don't have a hacksaw you can pick a small one up for about $7, get it when you buy your nuts. Remove any burrs from the bolt. The end result is a functional pet door, well sealed, well used and appreciated. Good luck.

Great pet door
One of the better and inexpensive models. I've seen some that are $500-$800 for a door that perform nearly the same as this one.Installation for me was a bit difficult, not because of the door but because my wall studs are 10 inches apart in my whole house. So I had to cut open the dry wall, cut the stud and build a U frame with 2x4 to go around the door that will still support the wall stud. I also rerouted electrical wiring because I really wanted the door where I wanted it.The template they provided for drilling is good. If your installing the door through a wall, take my advice and get a helper to hold the other side of the door while you try to bolt the doors together. Also, pop open the side of the wall kit after you have everything together and guide the bolts by hand to the hole. Playing the guessing game is really a hassle you don't want to deal with when you don't know if its screwing in.You can easily bend the wall kit so that the grooves slips and back in together and it will save you hours of install time. I'm including a picture of what I'm talking about.

Doesn't Fit. Need to do lots of modifications to make work.
It doesn't fit the door kit. Bought both the super large door and super large wall kit. The wall kit is 4" too tall. The depth is fine. There are a few tabs that you can snap off to adjust the depth. None of the snap off depths fit my wall perfectly, so I ripped them on a table saw. The pieces fit together with tongue and groove (T&G) joints. But when I had to cut 4" off the sides to adjust the height, then the T&G joint was gone. I glued every remaining T&G joint with PVC glue, which worked great. The wall kit has raised edges along the perimeter. I had to grind off the raised edges in order to get the wall kit to slide into the outer frame of the door kit. The bolts are long and need to be cut to length. That's fine, but they have machine threads and won't screw into the plastic holes. I bought long thin lag screws with coarse threads that would bite into the plastic holes.

Nice door overall
I would give this a 4 1/2 stars. I likw it for the most part. I was ablw to install this by myself. Im a licensed general contractor and journeyman carpenter. I too the extra step to build a frame for it and a header. The instructions didn't xall for it. But it should have. The flaps do catch on the sides a bit from time to time letting cold air into the house. This is the only size door i could get that my big pups dont get thier ribs caught om the sides

We remodeled our home and had the dog access mounted to a back door. When we remodeled we chose to move the dog access to a wall. Since the dog access was relatively new (less than 6 months) we were glad to find this adapter that would accommodate the thickness of a wall installation. The excess snapped off easily, the parts went together well. Anyone needing guidance can easily YouTube this product, there are many videos to help with the process. It fit the pet door very well.

Fits good with door. Could use more depth options
This extension kit works good with the proper sized door; when installing into a wall opening. The only suggestion to improve it would be to have more depth options; as not all houses are built to the same thicknesses.
