Great for use in solar cookers
I actually didn’t buy this to use on a grill, but as the cooking vessel for a solar cooker. It works great for that. Cooking vessels for most types of solar cookers need to be black, to absorb sunlight, and this is definitely black. Unlike the usual cooking vessels of pots and pans, these grill mats take up virtually no room and weigh practically nothing, which can be important when traveling and camping.I just tested this concept by making an extremely simple solar cooker by lining the inside of a large cardboard box with mirror Mylar. (Aluminum foil or the shiny insides of snack bags would also work.) I wrapped a raw potato in one of these grill mats. For the most portable design, I would have then wrapped this up in a clear plastic oven bag to prevent the wind from cooling it off, but I didn’t happen to have one, so I instead enclosed it in a glass baking vessel with a lid. I put this in the box and set the box so the sun shone into it.A few hours later, I had a hot baked potato, perfectly cooked with nothing but solar power. It didn’t have any off taste from the material, and the mat was very easy to clean. Even this very primitive, simple design worked great, but I’m planning an improved design, foldable and portable, with properly parabolic mirrors, that should cook faster and possibly get hot enough to brown the food. Now that I have proof of concept that black grill mats are a great material to use for solar cookers, I’ll incorporate them into my future portable solar cooker designs.
