I bought this one for my 6-grader and he really enjoyed it. I bought this book for my 5th Grade daughter. She really loves this book. This is her review:I believe this book is amazing. It has wonderfully written parts, it doesn’t just describe an image, it paints with words, to show a picture more beautiful than any photo.It also has meaningful morals that are like geodes, beautiful crystals hidden in layers of rock.The plot has breathtaking, fast moments that are laced with panic similarly to accidentally falling off a cliff, and serene, calm and beautiful moments like realizing you were actually falling into a lake with a beautiful view of the fish and coral below. The foreshadowing is wonderfully planted like flowers, not knowing the clue was there until it springs up in a kaleidoscope of glory. And, it has a lesson before all other lessons: embrace change. Change is an important thing, it is like a snake shedding its skin, to get rid of the old one and changing into new and flexible skin. I hope this convinces you to read this amazingly crafted book. Is it possible to make lessons about leadership skills fun? The author set out to do this. She crafted The Belt of Chaos in the style of a fantasy story, making teaching leadership qualities an adventure. The readers follow an adventure while learning the secrets of good leadership.In the story, life is shattered in the kingdom due to the king's abdication, plunging the world into chaos. Introverted teen photographer Sasha Ears is abruptly thrust from her everyday life to the kingdom teetering on the brink. Sasha must summon her strength and rescue the prince and her family or facing their impending demise. But as secrets unravel and connections deepen, Sasha discovers that her adventure is more than just a rescue mission—a quest to uncover her true destiny.This book is a quick-moving story in which readers will not even notice that they are being taught valuable leadership skills. Hopefully, when they have to deal with similar real-life situations, the story will come back to them as insight into improving communication and problem-solving human relationships. The writing style is a little flowery and corny, but that style may appeal to the younger audience.

Upon reading Belt of Chaos, I found myself entranced with all the characters, especially Sasha Ears and the magical settings. Shan Shan Nie’s vivid imagination really had me hooked (and I normally don't experience that with other books)! I also grew up in Boston and really enjoyed the references to the T, Chinatown and Malden.

This is an incredibly descriptive and imaginative tale of a young girl struggling with her parent’s decision to move from her family. She becomes sucked into an alternate universe and needs to find her way back home. The author beautifully describes each scene and each character such that you feel you are in that world with the heroine. Sci Fi/Fantasy isn’t usually my genre, but I’m glad our book club picked this and look forward to the author’s 2nd book.

First I've read of this genre. When on holiday I look for easy read or teenage books and this held plenty of surprises. Not only was it an intruiging read but had a great way of bringing in life lessons without being cheesy about it. Just what I wanted for a poolside distraction. I'm going to send a copy to my niece.
