This was simple to use but, and it's a big butt, I got random readings some times. I used it to hang a tv and I had to keep redoing until I was sure where the center of the stud was. I got it though

The fundamental reason people want to use stud-finders is that we cannot see into the walls to see where the studs are. This instrument appears to do what it purports to do: It can find the center of a wooden stud, and it can find the center of a steel stud -- provided you first set the selector in the instrument to find the right type of stud (wood or metal). The most common and pertinent problem relating to this, in my experience, is: I cannot tell whether a particular wall contains steel or wooden studs. This instrument assumes you already know. The purpose of the instrument is to help you avoid cutting a hole in the wall to see what's inside. Unfortunately if you do not already know whether metal or wood studs are contained within a particular many-times-remodeled wall, this instrument provides no simple way to tell. So you don't know how to properly set it to find the center of WHICH KIND of stud is in the particular wall you are working on. Do you see the problem? As is often the case these days, people define the context assuming that everyone will face precisely the same problem they imagine. Well, we don't know what is inside these strangers' walls we are contracted to work on. Why don't you use your product -- or at least go watch some workmen try to use it on-site somewhere? Then you might figure out what the more basic problem of generating context is. This instrument, although it functions as advertised, DOES NOT SOLVE MY PROBLEM. It does not solve the basic problem. Designers: Please wake up!

A house tool you need all the tims

I’ve had this for about a year. I use it to find wood studs. I just finished another job that required stud locations and it did not disappoint. I recommend this for finding wood studs. It also identifies AC in the wall. I can’t speak for the metal studs. It does both.
