Makes a bitter tonic. Tastes so horrible but is good for your health ๐ซ
Kutki is a traditional Ayurvedic herb that has been used for centuries to treat a variety of ailments. This 100gr weight package of Organic Spree Kutki Herb is manufactured in India and is perfect for those looking to incorporate the ancient healing power of Ayurveda into their daily routine. Kutki - scientifically known as Picrorhiza kurroa - is a perennial herb from the family Scrophulariaceae that grows up to 10 cm high. Its roots are elongated and 5-10 cm in length, with a bitter taste. The name Picorrhiza comes from the Greek word โPicrozโ which means โbitterโ and โrhizaโ meaning โrootโ, referring to the bitter taste of the herb. Also, Kutki (or KATUKI in Ayurveda) is derived from the word katu. The literal meaning of this term is pungency with bitterness. I rinsed it according to the instructions on the packet. I powdered it using my mortar and pestle then dried it out under direct sunlight. Once the herbs were dried I placed 3 teaspoons (15ml) of the powdered root into a teapot and poured boiling water over it, left it to steep for a good 10 minutes and tasted it.... Goodness me! The bitterness is something else! Not disgusting and the smell is pleasant and herbal so I identified it as a necessary sacrifice for its potential benefits and downed a whole cup. No sugar or honey. Straight. It leaves a fresh and pure aftertaste. All I can say is, it's an acquired taste - I happen to like it now. It makes an amber coloured tisane/infusion. It is a completely natural and organic product - doesn't contain any chemicals. It's working well for me. I did have to adjust the quantity as 15ml is very laxative. Try it... It tastes so horrible but is good for health.

Lots of benifit for health bitter but good
Organic Spree Kutki Herb offers a pure and natural source of Picrorhiza Kurroa, also known as Katuka Rohini, in a convenient 100-gram package. This traditional Ayurvedic herb is believed to support liver health and aid digestion, making it an intriguing option for those interested in natural supplements. While its strong, bitter taste may be challenging for some users, the product's organic certification and convenient size make it accessible for those looking to incorporate Kutki into their wellness routine. However, as with any herbal supplement, effects can vary between individuals, and it's wise to consult a healthcare professional before use, especially given the limited scientific research on its long-term benefits.

Hidden costsโcomes as hard roots, not powder
I bought this expecting a ready-to-use herb, but it arrived as whole, dried pieces of Picrorhiza Kurroa. To actually use this, I now have to spend an additional ยฃ20 on a high-quality grinder. This makes the total cost nearly double what I originally paid. If you don't already own a heavy-duty herb grinder, be prepared for the extra expense and effort!!

Semi-expensive Kutki
This bag of kutki herb is somewhat on the expensive side compared to other options on Amazon. At time of review, this bag costs $63.08 / 100 grams which is expensive for anything. It wasn't too hard to find a kutki herb, albeit a powder at a cost of $16.65 / 100 grams which is much more favorable, and another for $44.58 / 100 grams. It always pays to shop around and so you may want to do that in this case, but still, I'm reasonably sure that if you're looking for kutki, this stuff will work for you.

Don't make the same mistake as me...
So, I sort of ordered this on a whim without fully understanding what I was getting. When it arrived and there were actual roots in a bag I was taken aback. I was expecting this to come as a powder, which is 100% my fault for not reading the description fully. Luckily they do provide full instructions on how to prepare this on the bag, and I really appreciated that. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I don't own a mortar and pestle so I had to kind of figure out my own way to grind these up...which was not easy. I went in expecting this to not have a pleasant taste so that didn't bother me. I added a bit of honey but found it didn't help much. The taste is what it is but that's just how it goes sometimes with this sort of product. I have only consumed this the one time so far and did not experience any adverse effects. They warn you not to drink too much so be mindful. Don't be like me, read the product description before ordering! While I have no prior experience with this sort of product, and would not look to purchase it again in the future because I'm far to lazy to prepare this on any sort of regular basis, the herb is exactly what it is supposed to be. If you know what you are doing (and own a mortar and pestle) then I can recommend this product to you as again, it is exactly what it is advertised to be.

Is this Kutki Herb any good?
PROS: - High Medicinal Quality: The rhizomes and roots arrive as large, clean pieces that look very healthy and high-quality for an uncut herb. - Effective Digestion Aid: I have found that it genuinely helps with digestion and bloating, which is exactly what it is traditionally used for. - Liver Support: As someone looking to support my liver health, I appreciate that this contains active picrosides that are known for their hepatoprotective benefits. - Versatile Preparation: While I usually make it as a tea, I like that I can also soak a piece to soften it or grind it into a powder to mix with other ingredients. - Resealable Packaging: The bag is sturdy and keeps the roots fresh, which is important since the herbal aroma is very strong. - Pure and Natural: I really like that there are no additives, preservatives, or artificial flavors. Just the raw herb. CONS: - Intense and Bitter Taste: This is not a "pleasure" tea; it is incredibly bitter, and even after adding manuka honey, I could still taste the strong root flavor. - Difficult Preparation: I had to work for my tea, like I needed to wash and grind the roots using a mortar and pestle, which took a lot of physical effort. - Strong Aroma: The smell out of the bag is very intense and earthy; once I started brewing it, it smelled quite a bit like wet dirt. - Potential Stomach Upset: I have to be careful with the dosage because it is very potent and can definitely cause some belly discomfort if I take too much. - Requires a Grinder: Since the roots are very hard, I found it difficult to process them without a proper heavy-duty grinder or mortar and pestle. VERDICT: Organic Spree Kutki Herb is a serious medicinal tool, not a relaxing evening beverage. I personally find the taste "bitter but better" for my health, especially for my liver and digestion, but I have to be prepared to put in the work to grind it. If you are looking for a natural Ayurvedic remedy and can handle a pungent, earthy profile, this is an excellent choice, but casual tea drinkers should definitely look elsewhere.
