are these emitters inline?

These emitters are not inline. The black barb is where the water drips out. To install, punch the colored barb directly into your mainline tubing or it fits onto the end of 1/4" tubing. If we can help answer any other questions, let us know!

How is anyone's experience with hard water deposits? Do these emitters really self-clean?

In our area, we have fairly hard water and I've used these for years -- seldom have a problem with clogging.

Do these work on netafim 12mm and 17mm tubing?

Yes. You can use the included yellow hole punch to punch a hole in the tubing at the desired location, and then insert the grey barb of the dripper into the punched hole. The water will drip from the black barb. Any other questions we can assist with, just let us know!

emitter still drips when system shuts off, i thought the check valve is supposed to stop the drip.the emitter is the last on the bottom of the hill

Not 100% sure what you’re asking, but I’ll take a shot at it. Drippers function includes pressure, and with the water source turned off, anything downhill from there will drip until the line is empty. A check valve at the “top” of the system will prevent water from backing up into the water source. Hope this helps.
