ASUS ExpertWiFi EBG15 Gigabit VPN Wired Router, up to 3 WAN ethernet Ports + 1 USB WAN, IPS Intrusion Prevention, Layer 7 Firewall, Commercial-Grade Network Security, Remote Management with App

I am not an IT pro or networking expert. I just needed an easy-to-install wired router for my small home office, which has one or two PCs running at a time. This router fits the bill perfectly. This is a big deal because there seem to be very few routers that meet these simple criteria (wired and easy to install). In fact, as of this writing in September 2024, this is the only one I could find. It seems the tech industry has decided everyone using the internet at home wants wifi. And anyone who doesn't want wifi must be a networking expert. What they are missing is that there are some important reasons why a home user who is not a networking expert might prefer a wired router: - Faster internet speeds. - Superior security. - No additional radio waves bouncing around the house, a potential technical or health issue. Pros of this unit: - Wired only. No wifi capabilty without adding other components. - Plug-and-play simplicity, if that's what you want. Seriously, I simply plugged everything in and it worked flawlessly. - Fast internet speeds. Provided the highest internet speeds I've ever seen through a router. - Tons of advanced networking features if you need them. There are web and mobile interfaces you can use to access the well-designed online dashboard. Honestly, most of the settings there were over my head. It appears you don't need to use the interface at all if you don't want to. - Physical design is clean, simple, and compact. The case is metal, believe it or not, which I think is great. - Provides immediate connection when started up, unlike some other wired routers that reportedly take a few minutes to start delivering data. Cons: - It isn't designed for desktop use. Rather, it seems like it's meant to be screwed to a wall in a server room or something like that. I say this because it doesn't really have a "front", unless it's the top where the name is printed. There are screw slots on the bottom. Power input and internet connections are on opposite sides of the unit. For SOHO use (small office / home office), it would be nice to have all the wires going into one side and indicator lights on the other. - Confusingly, it has "Wifi" in its name. Apparently ExpertWifi is the name of the product line, which does include some wifi components. By itself, to be clear, this unit has no wifi capability. - It comes with a comically simple quick start guide that basically just says to plug everything in and then check out the user interface. A little more plain-English explanation for the non tech-savvy would be cool. All in all, after many hours of searching online and reading articles, I've concluded this router is in a class by itself: a simple, efficient, plug-and-play wired router. Thank you, ASUS!

Works great! At a price point right around $80 (when I bought it), you get the functionality/flexibility typically only found in much more expensive routers. This is a WIRED router, so don't purchase it if you are looking for a router that has built-in wifi. I use this as the backbone for home network and all of my ethernet-connected Asus mesh wifi-routers... it has been working flawlessly for 6+ months now. Regarding setup, depending on your needs and network requirements, you might have to do some additional research because user-interface is not always easy to understand. If you don't need to use "expert settings" for your particular network, then it is pretty easy to setup. Once I figured out my initial "advanced" setup (took a few hours to research and test), I have not had to make any changes and my network has been working perfectly for 6+ months. If you are a networking novice, you might want to skip buying this unit unless you need the advance functions, you have some level of patience and you want to do some additional research. Small footprint for unit that you can tuck-away close to your where your ethernet cables reside.I would highly recommend this router for anyone that wants advanced functionality and with some networking experience.

I bought three of this to try out in my Lab. I configured it for WAN and tethering, NOT the touted AiMesh. However, on the browser web interface, it still shows "AiMesh" on the toolbar! Configuration/setup is confusing. Note: All of these are in my IT Lab. On the dashboard, only the primary WAN is showing. I connected my Android phone to the USB port and the router is connected to the Internet. The mobile phone connection does not show on the dashboard. I only know it is connected because the DNS BENCHMARK on the dashboard shows there is DNS connectivity to Google, Cloudflare, etc.. With only the USB tethering internet connection, in the VPN Fusion page, it shows "No Internet Connection"!!!! I set up one of these EBG15, while connected to the Internet using my Android phone tethering, with VPN Fusion to one of my gateway 1,800 miles away. This gateway uses a different brand but it is running OpenVPN service. I use OpenVPN protocol to connect to that gateway. The EBG15 connected to the remote gateway however, there is no place in the web interface to see what IP Address the connection it was using. Even though the VPN Fusion shows that it is connected to the remote gateway, my laptop cannot ping any remote device. This is a deal breaker. I tried L2TP. However, since the remote gateway's L2TP implementation requires a PassPhrase and the EBG15 implementation has no choice of PassPhrase option, only username/password for authentication. So another deal breaker. I setup the other two for site-to-site using Wireguard while their WAN ports are connected to a switch. The Wireguard VPN between the two EBG15's were connected. I connected my laptop to one of the LAN port on one EBG15. I tried to ping the LAN IP of the other EBG15 but no response. Even though the VPN fusion on both units were showing as connected. I moved my laptops connection to the other unit and tried to ping the LAN IP of the other unit - the same thing, cannot ping any LAN device in the other unit. Another deal breaker. There seems to be non-existent support for this router. Not even a community in social media that I know of. There is no community for Asus routers in general in Reddit. I am very disappointed with my purchase. I don't recommend this product to anyone.

This router is great. It supports multi WAN failover and Link Aggregation Control Protocol-incredible. But do not use the phone app- it is a waste and locks down all the important controls- making the best and only way to interfece the advanced features the local web interfaces via IP or the startup page. There are many features worth the headache of resetting and deleting the Android app and starting form scratch. The one standout feature is the VPN-Wireguard VPN no less-support. It also support all the other VPN protocols you expect as well. You also get what seems to be a decent IPS (Intrusion Prevention System) and the ability to filter URLs and other "next gen" capabilities recently reserved ony for the high end business products. I love the product-the local web interface takes getting used to, but the Android app is just not good- do not bother or it will ruin an otherwise near Firewalla level experience but with even more VPNs supported (Wireguard!) and for much less. Overall a great product. Just avoid the app and login locally like any other routher and you are good. Great for cost sensitive cybersecurity people that are not interested in subscription models of other products. This should work for years.

I bought this device to add a USB tethered device as a backup WAN after my Fiber ISP had some extended outages. The multi-WAN worked fine, but my network became so unreliable I had to return it. I used this router's DHCP server, and devices connected by ethernet would drop connection and become unreachable. I confirmed the latest firmware was installed, and only connected devices to the LAN ports and avoided the LAN/WAN ports. My network was completely reliable before I tried the router, and works flawlessly since I removed it.

Okay let’s first start off that most of the people that left negative reviews on this Wired VPN Router probably have zero experience or the knowledge of setting up a Gateway (aka router) the G.U.I is fairly easy to navigate when you log into the router using your web browser interface, the Asus expert app is so …..so….so… slow to log into since it’s using the built in Bluetooth network card inside the EGB15 (FYI this router has zero wi fi capabilities on its own), you can use several VPN protocols with this router to include the OPENVPN, WIREGUARD, etc (this is a 7layer firewall router). One thing to point out is that the firmware is currently a bit buggy (new firmware updates should fix these few bugs that it currently has) that I have the router automatically reboot daily at a scheduled date and time that you can customize through the router settings. If you don’t have a basic understanding of how to set up a router I would recommend that you either YouTube some tutorials or ask the Chat A.I. and learn as you go like I did, and if your not comfortable doing that than don’t get this router is my advice. Besides the short Cummings mentioned above this router is great for Home networking setup, especially since the subscription free A.I. Protection pro is included for free for life, that’s a huge yearly savings, and for the price of $89.99 its a steal for what you get, there is literally nothing else on the market that can compete with what this router offers at this price range.

I was looking for a wired only ethernet router replace my aging Netgear WiFi router which is no longer getting security updates through new firmware updates. The "ASUS ExpertWiFi EBG15 Gigabit VPN Wired Router" fits the role nicely. My current home network setup consists of an old Netgear WiFi router with WiFi turned off and a Deco WiFi Mesh setup in the AP mode. Netgear informed me that I should replace my current Netgear router as it is out of service. The web interface of the ASUS EBG15 is pretty clear but the device is not exactly "plug and play". Once it is plugged in , it created a new 192.168.50 network. Since my current network is 192.168.1 and some devices are on static IP addresses, I had to change it. Once I changed the router LAN IP address to 192.168.1, there was no internet connection. I did a factory reset on the EBG15 but that did not help the internet connection. Finally I power recycled both the cable modem and EBG15 and everything started working Since the EBG15 does not control my WiFi, the ExpertWiFi Android app is not useful and cannot find my router at all. The app could be useful if one also purchased one of the ASUS AiMesh units such as the ASUS ZenWiFi BD4 (3-Pack) Dual-Band WiFi 7 Mesh. The EBG15 has many other features that I am not currently using, such as the VPN support, multiple WAN binging, or VLAN support. Over time, these features may become important to have.

SPECS : TP Link - 1.2Ghz Dual core Helios 256MB RAM 128MB Flash NAND ASUS - 1.7Ghz Quad core Qualcomm 512MB RAM 256MB Flash NAND Asus is a far superior router! I bought the TP link at first impressed with the price, but knowing I should get Asus. After 3 weeks using the TP link it crashed once a week running a VideoIP server with 3 cams on 4CIF totaling about 3-4mbps of constant traffic to the NVR-PC. That was enough to make the TP Link crash weekly *Facepalm* Third time I was tired of messing around and setting all of the network IPs back so I bought this Asus version. 5 weeks not one crash & I couldn't be happier with this thing. The UI is better than the TP link to use. However its live usage chart updates far less often. That can probably be set. Buts a silly feature that still tells you temps/cpu/ram usage. Thanks ASUS! EDIT: 8 weeks in zero crashes. This is the wired only VPN load balancing router. Compared to the TP Link ER605

This router is a powerhouse. The build quality feels premium and it performs perfectly. The standout feature for me is the UI—it is incredibly clean and makes managing the network simple, even with all the advanced functionality available. I've had zero downtime since setting it up. It handles multiple devices and heavy traffic without breaking a sweat. Highly recommended for small businesses or advanced home users.

My customer had to downgrade from Cisco Meraki due to the high cost. I installed 9 of these in 9 separate restaurants and found the setup to be easy and intuitive. Features are robust and remote access makes future changes easy. This router is commercial grade so it won't fail 1 year in like most residential routers. Great value for the money.

This router EBG15 has no "dnsmasq", therefore the local clients on your internal network will not be able to see each other by hostname, but only by IP address. That is a major feature missing, and exists in all routers with a little respect for themselves. Very disapointing.

Also include a a two-Way Intrusion Prevention System protects any device connected to the network from spam or DDoS attacks. Hey for the price no complain at all. 100% happy. This is very much an entry-level router, lacking many features I need: - Daylight Time changes are hardocded into the time zone selection and there’s no way to disable it or set it to a specific date. - Firewall rules are a joke. A limit of 128 entries, each of which can be a single IP and a single protocol (CIDR subnet specifications aren’t supported).. So I can’t block an entire troublesome subnet, of which I have many. - If you accidentally click Switch Control the whole box locks up. No explanatory message, no confirmation option. Sometimes power cycling untangles it, but a factory reset and reconfiguration might also be necessary. Returning this box.
