If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re dealing with the known battery defect on the Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds. I bought a used pair on eBay as an upgrade from my Pixel Buds A, but the battery life was awful—barely 10–12 minutes, wouldn’t charge past 50–60%, and the earbuds got so hot the case would blink red. After some research, I bought this battery replacement kit and I’m extremely satisfied. The kit completely revived what were essentially unusable earbuds and restored the battery life to its original expectancy—they honestly feel brand new again. I’m fairly tech-savvy and found the repair straightforward, though having an extra tool like a small clamp helped when opening the earbuds, and there are plenty of YouTube guides if needed. Overall, this kit absolutely saved my purchase and is well worth the money if you’re experiencing the same issue.

Like a lot of others, I ordered this kit to replace the damaged batteries caused by Sony with a faulty firmware update that ruined the originals. Before installing these new batteries, my earbuds would go from 100% charged to being dead in the span of about 15 minutes due to the firmware issue. Came with everything needed for a successful repair. Included the plastic spacer tools, a couple sets of tweezers that were not really suitable for the task, but I already had my own anyhow. Even had a set of finger gloves if you want to use them. Also came with a large tube of very good sealant that dispenses wonderfully and precisely. I compared the batteries to the originals and they are an exact match for specs. So far this kit has fixed my issue 100% and restored the original performance with surprising ease. I want to say it took me maybe 20 minutes to swap the batteries from start to finish with no real hiccups or issues along the way.

There is a lot of unnecessary stuff in the bag, especially if you already own some tweezers and prying tools, but the batteries are great. My earbuds are back to charging all the way and lasting as long as when they were new!

This kit had everything I needed to change out the batteries in my Sony earbuds. It ships with the exact same brand of battery used in the original configuration. The installation is a little tricky, but there are plenty of online how-to videos to show you how to get it done. The new batteries REALLY do a good job of holding a charge! BEWARE... most how-to videos say that you have to heat up the outside casing of the earbud to loosen the glue that holds the 2 halves together. I used a heat gun. Don't make the same mistake I did! Wear gloves, hold the earbud a good 8 to 10 inches from the heat gun outlet as it produces a lot of heat. I also recommend that you remove the ear tips. DO NOT use plyers to hold the earbud by the stem where the ear tips attach. It is very thin plastic and with the heat, they will begin to melt very quickly. I found this out the hard way. Fortunately I was able to coax the stem back into shape and it did not damage the function. In the end, this is a fine kit to replace Sony batteries (on compatible models) when used correctly!

Much like most people the batteries in the Sony earbuds have less than two years of life. In fact Sony replaced my earbuds where the replacements only lasted a year before the runtime was <1.5 hours. While I watched the Youtube videos and read some Reddit threads, what I eventually did to open the earbuds was to use a small bar clamp with the jaws wrapped with electrical tape to prevent marking the earbuds. In short I need the force which was more than I expected to get a seam going on the earbud. Once a seam was open I was able to use the kit's guitar pick to run around the seam to break the glue bond. After the earbud was open partway I popped the two boards apart with a spudger, which was not included in the kit. Then I open the ribbon cable connector using the pry tool provided, removing the cable with a finger nail and the edge of the pry tool. Note the ribbon cable is glued down, thus getting the spudger under the cable to release the glue is required. Also the Youtube videos show using tweezers to remove the ribbon cable... I certainly don't recommend this given the ribbon cable is too delicate. Best to ease the cable out, and later back in. The battery on both earbuds were firmly glued in place where the most difficult task was getting the old battery out of the earbud. Thus first I used the spudger to break the glue bond between the card on top of the battery ensuring to reposition the glue back around the electrical contact. Then using the spudger I was able to break through the glue at the edge of the battery. But glue under the battery required some twisting of the battery with long nose pliers before I was able to lift up the battery with the pointed end of a spudger. Reinstallation was straight forward where I tested both earbuds before applying glue. The enclosed glue is ideal for the task. Once dry it is easy to remove any excess, though taking care to only apply a small amount in the first place is very appropriate. In fact Sony didn't seem to have glue all around the earbud. Thus I submit there is no reason to go overboard unless you are planning to get the earbuds damp (note not wet). I used two clamps also with electrical tape on the jaws to hold the buds closed until the glue cured. Be careful to ensure there is enough force or there will be a seam. Though maybe leaving a seam has utility given I suspect in 1-2 years the replacement batteries will also be subject to replacement given what appears to be a defective Sony design.

Overall it was a very complete kit with picks, pry tools, 3 small screw drivers, a razor blade and some finger sleeves. If you already have tools, these tools will seem very flimsy and probably won't last. I ended up not using any of the tools but the small tube of glue has a needle point tip for precisely applying a small bead of glue around the whole seam of each ear bud without making a mess. You will have enough glue left for probably another 20 earbuds. Lastly there was come discoloration on one of the batteries but tested within spec with a multimeter. It was worth it for just the two batteries and the tube of glue. The only thing missing was a heat gun but you can't expect that at this price point. My earbuds have the same capacity as when they were new but only time will tell if they last. I will update if they fail prematurely.
