Hogue OverMolded Rubber Shotgun Stock for Mossberg 500 12, 16, 20, 28 Gauge

I have a Mossberg 590A1, which, if you know Mossberg's lineup, you'll know has a 20-inch heavy barrel and holds 8+1 rounds. It's the model used by the military, the big boy shotgun. In fact, it's almost too big. With the heavy barrel and a full magazine tube, it's uncomfortably front-heavy (and that's before you try to put the bayonet lug to use). The factory stock doesn't help, either; with its standard 14-inch length of pull, all that metal is hanging way out in front of you. I'm an average 6-foot-tall guy, but that LOP is a bit much, especially for this gun's intended tactical uses. So I ordered this Hogue stock with the 12-in LOP, and my 590A1 has been transformed from "unwieldy hunk of metal" to "badass tactical shotgun". Let me say first that a lot of guys will just stick an AR-15 style 6-position stock on and call it good. That's not a terrible option, but when you consider that Mossberg shotguns have the ambidextrous safety on the top of the receiver, intended to be operated with the thumb, there's really no way to take it off safe quickly if your hand is down clutching a pistol grip. For a Mossberg, something like this is really the only way to go if you want to be able to train with it and operate it as it's intended. I will say that if the standard stock is way too big, the 12-in Hogue might be a tad short, especially for tall guys. But I didn't buy the gun to shoot clay pigeons with (although I have done it), so for me, and for the shotgun's intended purpose, it's nearly perfect. And if you are wearing body armor or a heavy coat, it's just right. That two inches makes a world of difference in how the shotgun handles. Now the business end of the 590A1 is as intimidating as ever, but the overall length (and weight) has been reduced just enough to make it much more manageable. On to features. I noticed Mossberg recently came out with a "youth" version of the 500 series, with a 12 LOP like this Hogue stock. I'd still take the Hogue, and I'll tell you why: the "overmolded" grip. The standard stock is slick enough that your hand wants to slide down naturally to the more vertical part of the stock, which leaves your index finger too far away to reach the trigger comfortably. The Hogue solves that with a dimpled rubbery grip area that provides a lot more traction for your hand. Installation is fairly easy, but you'll need a long flathead screwdriver and a smallish philips head (tip: definitely take Hogue's advice and use a drop of lube to slide the philips head into the slits in the rubber buttpad -- sorry if that sounded gross). Quality I would say is very good, though you will sacrifice a bit of toughness compared to the standard stock, if only because the walls of the standard stock are quite a bit thicker (this helps keep the Hogue's weight down, though). In reality I seriously doubt you could break the Hogue unless you were using the flat side of it to violently hammer tent stakes into frozen ground or something dumb like that. The buttpad is soft and grippy, no complaints there. If you're interested in installing a shell holder on the stock, I found that this ATI Shotshell Holder installed easily (you'll have to drill pilot holes) and fit nicely, even on this short stock. Overall, I'm fully satisfied, and though I haven't had it out shooting yet with the new stock on, I seriously doubt anything will change my mind. Highly recommended.

Swapped it on my maverick 88. Definitely feels better and highly recommend over stock version. No additional tools or parts needed either. Install took less than 5mins.

Fits well on a Maverick 88 twelve gauge. Doesn't appear nor feel cheap, or look out of place. A perfectly quality firearms component.

Decent stock, but keep in mind this kit does NOT come with the bolt you will need to attach it to the firearm. The packaging with the slot for the bolt comes with a simple washer and thats it. You will need a 5-1/2" bolt with a coarse thread size of 5/16"-18

Pretty straight forward install. Overall good quality, and definitely shortens the length of pull.

Fit my Mossberg 500, 20 gauge (model 50452) great and reduces the Length Of Poll (LOP) to 12" from butt plate end to trigger. I'm 6'1" and it feels like it fits me better now in a home defense scenario, but especially for my wife and older daughters it is a better fit. I would prefer the 14" LOP for hunting, given my size. It DOES NOT come with a new 5.5" bolt, but no problem, you reuse the one that holds on the 14" LOP standard stock (not the pistol grip bolt--that bolt is way too short). Or, order a 5.5" Mossberg bolt on Amazon from various sellers for around $8, or go to the hardware store and get one, or order from Mossberg directly if you don't have one. It DOES come with a wider diameter flat washer that you reuse in place of the standard circular flat washer that comes with the gun. The reason is that the smaller diameter standard one will not seat properly in the Hogue stock since the bolt hole inside the Hogue stock is wider than standard stock. I also reused the "lock washer" that comes standard with the gun. So, in summary, I reused my original 5.5" bolt and the lock washer, but used the new Hogue wider diameter washer, and saved the smaller standard stock flat washer with the original stock in case I ever revert back. Use a 1/2" hex socket plus extension for best results to remove and replace the bolt, or a large flat head screwdriver if you don't have socket set. Use a Phillips screwdriver to take off the standard stock end cap (recoil pad) to get at the 5.5" bolt. Put a little oil on the tip of the Phillips screwdriver (easier insertion) and pinch apart the Hogue rubber end cap (recoil pad) near the top and bottom to expose a tiny slit that covers the Phillips screws on the Hogue recoil pad. Those tiny slits will reform closed and seal back up on their own, when you are done.

Fixes LOP issues. A great product

It’s ok. Sure seems thin and flimsy. It doesn’t balance out the rifle weight with being so hollow and thin. Not even sure how long it will last. I’ll go with magpul instead.

Fits the 500 but as others have said you need to find the bolt yourself (if converting from pistol grip).

Very nice stock. It keeps my "Mossy" looking original but also adds more function with better grip. The butt pad is soft rubber so it does soak up some of the recoil. Two issues I have (reason for only 3 stars) is the hollow sound from the stock...Yeah I get it....its plastic and designed to be lightweight but this makes it feel cheap. I fixed this by putting in some foam to deaden the the sound. the other thing is I own the pistol grip Maverick 88 model and you have to supply your own longer bolt and spacers to make this work. This is something of an inconvenience.
