Our old ice cream scoop (which we owned for about 6 years, similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DVFET9S/ref=s9_dcacsd_bhz_bw_c_x_1) broke recently when the handle separated cleanly from the neck/bowl section, and I have been on the search for a replacement. Our freezer has a tendency to keep ice cream solidly frozen, rendering it hard to scoop. I have had several different scoops in the past, some of which worked better than others, so for this search, my criteria was as follows:1. Easy to clean, preferably dishwasher-safe.2. Solid stainless steel bowl that won't pit or lose its coating.3. Good, comfortable grip.4. Ability to cut through hard ice cream with ease.5. Good scoop size for serving in bowls and sugar cones.6. Easy ice cream release (little to no sticking).7. Durable.8. Reasonably priced.9. High satisfaction write-ups on Amazon and other sites (especially those written by reviewers who did not receive the item at a discount in exchange for a review).I started by looking at a variety of styles & features: trigger/lever release mechanisms; antifreeze in the handle; spade-style; made from a single piece of metal; comfort grips; stainless steel bowls (both round and oval); non-stick coated, etc. After reading many reviews (both pro and con) for the different styles, and comparing these with the results of the America's Test Kitchen ice cream scoop tests, I opted to purchase the SUMO ice cream scoop.I am thrilled with my decision! I am a big OXO Good Grips fan, however, having read a number of reviews of the OXO model, it appears that there have been some problems with the bowl either rusting or pitting over time. Because the SUMO scoop comes with a lifetime guarantee, I chose it over the OXO scoop (at the time I purchased it, it was also less expensive). After I purchased the SUMO scoop, I read that OXO stands behind their products as well, but I'm happy with my purchase.As other reviewers have mentioned, the scoop arrives nicely packaged in a box. At the time of my purchase, the only color available was purple. (I am not a huge fan of purple, but heck, it's an ice cream scoop, so color wasn't a deciding factor. And it's a darker purple, not a pastel lilac color, so it's fine.) It's got a nice weight to it – solid, but not too heavy. I took out a new carton of ice cream from the freezer (Friendly's Black Raspberry) and tested the hardness with an 18/10 stainless steel soup spoon – it was pretty difficult to get my spoon to do much in terms of scooping, due to the hardness of the ice cream. I then tried the SUMO scoop. SUMO claims that their scoop "glides through hard frozen dessert like butter". Boy, does it ever – it absolutely cuts right through hard ice cream, making it a breeze to serve! I was shocked at how easy it was to scoop up the ice cream – as well as how easy it released into both sugar cones and bowls!After repeated use (and multiple washes in the dishwasher) I am still thrilled with my SUMO scoop. It meets all my required criteria, and then some! The pointed tip (which wasn't one of my original criteria) makes it easy to get into the corners of rectangular ice cream cartons, so that no ice cream is wasted. And having a scoop made from a solid piece of stainless steel – rather than one that has a separate neck and handle that have been welded together – means that I don't have to worry about this one breaking the way my last one did. My husband, my 10-year old son and I can all use this scoop easily - and the grip is comfortable for all of us. I highly recommend this scoop!I purchased this scoop at FULL price. Well out of the box i can say this scoop has what it takes to scoop some hard ice cream. First impressions it is a solid scoop with a bit of weight to it in the scoop end. The handle is firm but soft feeling and seems well built. The head is solid metal, not hollow and is not thin either. As a result it is a bit heavy on that end. If you have low grip strength or a weak hand this may not be the scoop for you as it has quite a bit of weight to it. On the plus side it looks and feels durable and is made with stainless steel so shouldn't rust. The scoop has a semi-sharp point and looks like it can cut into hard ice cream easily. it isn't so sharp as to cut flesh so that isn't a worry but it does come to a point and the edge is not rounded off. I can see how soaking this in hot water for a bit to heat up the scoop should allow you to scoop even the hardest ice cream easily. I have not yet used it since i just got it but wanted to get the first impressions out there for anyone wanting to buy it. I will revisit this review at a later date once i have had time to use it for a while and report the results.UPDATE: I can confirm that it can cut hard ice cream really well. made for getting bowl of the cold confection a LOT easier. I used to have to struggle a lot to get a small amount but now i can get it easier and in larger sizes if i want. Definitely recommend this scoop!

This is a fine ice cream scoop that is perfectly functional -- the handle is comfortable, with good ergonomics that makes it easy to scoop out the ice cream. It's sturdy and dish-washable. And, an added plus that I wasn't seeking -- it has an attractive design. I purchased the scoop with the bright blue handle.

A very good, sturdy, easy to use ice cream scooper. Just put it in the dishwasher when done.

Surprisingly weighty, will last a long time without damage from scooping hardened ice cream. Was undecided if I needed a scoop with the lever that helps get ice cream from scoop into the bowl (this does not have that). It is hard to get a well rounded scoop into the bowl without the lever thing. Works better (more presentable) if you let the ice cream soften for a few minutes.

I haven't used it yet, but it appears wellade, heavy duty construction.

This felt solid and balanced in the hand, it’s scoop is a hybrid of a spoon and a traditional ice cream scoop. It cuts into hard frozen ice cream without extra pressure on the wrist. The handle is weighted but in a way that makes scooping easier on the hands and wrists. Both of my parents used it and were pleased with it. It’s fantastic that it’s dishwasher safe and stainless steel so we don’t have to worry about the surface pitting in the future. Definitely a good purchase!

This scoop is heavy, has a pointy tip, comes in great colors, is easy to grip, scoops beautiful ice cream “balls,” and is dishwasher-safe. Enough said.

This is the best ice cream super scooper I've ever used, it's grrrrrrreat❗ The handle of this thing is so amazingly comfortable❗ My only complaint would be the purple handle isn't a bright/rich color purple that's pictured in the ad but my bad, it's just cosmetic & does not matter really. Ich bin wirklich absolut begeistert! Mit unseren alten Portionierern bin ich kaum durch das Eis gekommen und musste es daher immer leicht antauen lassen. Mit diesem Modell ist das absolut kein Problem mehr! Klappt ausgesprochen gut. Bin mehr als begeistert!

So far, this has been brilliant. It is very heavy and feels strong and solid. The handle is well designed and doesn't slip or dig into your hand. The slightly pointed end makes it easy to dig into very solid frozen ice cream. It can be washed in the dishwasher, but is easy to wash by hand. I hope this lasts longer than the last scoop I bought.

I don’t expect to ever need to buy another ice cream scoop in my lifetime.With a house full of strong young men we seem to destroy ice cream scoops pretty regularly. This scoop is really strong, heavy and I expect it will be really durable. It slices through ice cream well and turns out a great ball of ice cream.It costs a little more than the ice cream scoops I have purchased over the years, however it’s considerably less than the total amount I have spent all up on other scoops that failed the buff young men test. Highly recommended.
