King Crimson"s Lizard - a rock masterpiece
When I first heard King Crimson's Lizard, I was dazzled. I was a Lance-Corporal in the South African Defence Force at the time, early 1975, and was introduced to the record by a buddy who was a "freak", i.e. a Hippie. We would jam together, he on his Fender,I on my B-flat clarinet, later tenor sax. At the time I encountered Lizard, I was a tight-tailed little classical musician. I must have lain in my bungalow in the dark and listened to that vinyl copy of Lizard every night for a month. In contrast to so many rock groups I had heard in the background, these fellows could play and compose. Lizard's first melody, "Farewell the temple master's veil", is a beautifully composed, minor key melody. Lizard follows a well-constructed sequence of almost symphonic logic, as I thought then. Its fine lead guitar solo is like a funeral dirge. I still find it a striking work; there is certainly nothing like it in all the oeuvre of rock music, almost classical in its conception. Similar things can be said of the songs on the first side of the old vinyl disc. "Circus" again shows masterly construction, from its soft beginning to its strong conclusion and expressive harmonies. The melody is motivically built up in a way that a Brahms might have contrived. "Indoor games" is a parody of "games people play" with similarly parodic constructions of old-fashioned jazz, with a saxophone choir. The other cut which I loved particularly is "Lady of the dancing waters", with its gentle melody and flute solo. What a variety of contrasting styles and ideas! King Crimson never achieved the superstar status they deserved, largely, I think, because their music is too sophisticated and, yes, intellectual for the average rock-music lover. But to those who have "dicovered" them, they remain a great rock group. And of all their music, it is Lizard to which one constantly returns, even at over 40 years' remove. It is, it the purest sense of the word, a classic.

vinyl unplayable on side 2 track 2. plus update
I bought this album way back in the 1970s and lost it in one of the numerous moves since then, really looking forward to listening to it again, my wife bought this one for my birthday, side one had a mark on the first track on side one but nothing too detrimental the problem was when I turned it over track 2 had a gouge about 4" long swooping across it making it unplayable very disappointed as none of this was mentioned in the ad. I was not expecting pristine although it was wrapped and looked new when it arrived once out of its "clingfilm" that's when the damage became obvious. Update: Yesterday I took the damaged album up to the post office to return it. Today a new copy arrived ban spanking new perfect in every way now I can really enjoy what is a fantastic album. I have had, as is the common garbage parlance of today, a great journey thanks to Amazon one of my favourite albums has been returned to the fold. Thank You. You deserve the extra stars from 3 to 5

Amazed and mesmerized
I guess I had always avoided Lizard since I discovered and loved the KC in the late 80''s. Guess what, never too late to think again. This work is so rich of beautiful lyrics, astounding music and outstanding performances that it's a mystery to me why it's been the pariah in the mind of one of its creators (Fripp, but not Sinfield as much as I know). The sound of this stereo remastering is simply magnificent. Timbres, transients, notes decay, dynamics feel like a live concert in my living room. The magic of portraying another alternate universe of the Court of the Crimson King is so virtuosistic, vibrant, yet so humanistic that the result is totally veracious, compelling, fresh. Yes Greg Lake would have sung the opening number Cirkus better, and Gordon Haskel's commitment is dubious at times, but the beauty of the work is not diminished by that. In the Lizard's universe all the parts hold together by intellect and alchemy. Jon Anderson has never sounded more authentic than this to me, the musicianship of the band is simply sublime. I'm amazed and mesmerized.

A FLASK OF WEIRD
Lizard is a standout in the King Cimson catalog and by standout I mean there isn't anything else quite like it. Sometimes an artist is his/her most ferocious critic and perhaps that applies to Robert Fripp and his inability to listen to this work. From the day I rode my bicycle to downtown Colorado Springs back in 1972 to pick this up at Budget Tapes and Records on North Tejon I have loved this music. Now I already had started to develop a love of jazz music thanks to the band Spirit and the two earlier Crimson releases and by the time I heard Lizard I was already listening to Miles Davis and Zappa's jazz infused music. I suppose one could say the lyrics on Prince Rupert, especially the chorus MIGHT be a tad cringe worthy today BUT DAMMIT! The rest of this album is absolutely amazing. It is rather like three ropes have been braided together with each thread in turn standing out momentarily, the ropes being jazz, psychedelic rock and classical. This is especially true with the Erik Satie flavored Bolero and the Mingus flavored jazz on side two along with those suuden stop/starts one hears in prog rock maybe a little too often. I have to note here that in my humble opinion, if we MUST label LIZARD with a genre (which I think foolish because if ever a record defied labelling it is this one) it is really more like jazz wrapped around some rock song structures. LIZARD also has the distinction of being the one King Crimson release that features a trombone soloist and that's interesting given that another musical genius in California by the name of Frank Zappa started featuring the trombone of Bruce Fowler right around this same time. Unless you are something of a jazz fan it might not be noticeable that trombone is a wickedly superb instrument for improvisational expression, all of those brass blasts and glissandos, Nick Evans playing is just marvelous and the instrument is perfectly suited to this music. I don't know what else to write here other than to note that if you appreciate horn playing and the use of jazz tonality you are going to love this recording. If I could select only one King Crimson album to take into exile it would be a toss up between LIZARD and LARKS TONGUES IN ASPIC. The two releases are not even remotely like one another and yet I love them both because each is so unique in sound compared to any other work.
