Getting to know Churchill through his speeches
The speeches of Churchill are famous and well known and available in different formats. The merit of this book is that his grandson has selected the best and most interesting ones, almost 200, and that with each one he presents with few well-chosen sentences the context. With 500 pages and all the speeches in the sequence that they were given presents the reader with something like an autobiography. Very readable, very worthwhile.

Powerful words and ideas still relevant today!
A great read. Churchill was the greatest statesman/orator of the 20th century. His words have as much relevance today as went he presented them to world over 1/2 century ago. Masterpieces of logic and oration. Paraclies of ancient Athens, Samuel Adam's, Abraham Lincoln, and Winston Churchill are the best orators of western civilization.

Vielleicht der Redner des 20. Jahrhunderts
Weniger durch seinen ja gehandicapten Vortragsstil wurde Churchill zu einem der großen Redner des Jahrhunderts, sondern durch die Geschliffenheit der Sprache. Die humanistische Upper-Class-Erziehung (Abstammung von Marlborough) hatte da einmal etwas Gutes, denn sie gab Churchill ein Gefühl für Sprache und präzise, mächtige Vokabeln aus einem weiten Wortschatz. Diese Ausgabe ist ein kostengünstiger US-Reprint mit einigen schlichten Fotos und wäre als Prachtband für eher darauf Achtende komplett ungeeignet. Sogar der Buchschnitt ist zumindest bei meinem Exemplar regelrecht missraten. Doch fasst "Never give in" auf rund 500 Seiten wichtige Reden Churchills zusammen und ist bezahlbar. Ausgesucht und mit Kurzeinführungen versehen hat es Enkel Winston jr. Ein bisschen Geschichtskenntnisse vorher helfen gleichwohl zum Einordnen. Ich las es jetzt als gelebte Rhetorik und Geschichte - als gelebtes Leben mit Irrtümern und richtigen Entscheidungen. Vorsicht: wer anfängt, wird es auch bis zum Schluss durchlesen wollen. :-) Die Ausgabe könnte selbst für den Preis noch liebevoller gedruckt sein, doch fünf Sterne für den gut eingeführten Inhalt.
