500 Facts on Greece and famous Greeks before the Common Era (BCE)
This book is another of the ‘Facts’ books from AHOY Publications. Like the others, it presents a host of facts grouped somewhat topically about an overarching subject. The facts are generally objective. In this book on BCE Greece and Greeks, the first part summarizes the timeline from 8000 to 146 BCE. Since it is BCE, sometimes its disorienting that later history occurred in a lower number year. The information during the history portion is broken into various spans, each with thirty facts. If there is a glaring flaw in the book, it is that there is no pronunciation guide for the names, places and terms used by the ancient Greeks. The remainder of the book is diverse segments of 5-20 facts covering Ancient Greek Mythology & Religion, Olympics, Culture and Society, Philosophy, Mathematics, Science, Art, Architecture, and Literature, Language, Alphabet, Warfare, Trade, Commerce, Colonization, Law, and Government. If you are looking for a no-frills condensation on Ancient Greece, this is a good pace to begin. It might, however, be difficult to find the fact you are looking for, as there are only chapter headings and no detailed index.

Comprehensive insight into ancient Greek history
t was an interesting book through which I was able to gain insight into ancient Greek history and learn a lot. The book is versatile and covers many different periods and topics, with interesting data, presented in a colorful and enjoyable way. What I miss is the conciseness of the facts. I would have liked to get to know each and every fact better, in more detail. So I was left with the feeling that it was a somewhat sketchy note rather than a book.

A very thorough overview of Ancient Greek history!
Ancient Greek history is presented history in a highly readable format of essential facts, beginning with the early ancient history of Greek civilization from about 8000 BCE and extending through the early Hellenistic period in the 2nd century BCE. The rise of the early Greek city-states, the emergence of a form of democracy in ancient Greece, the Peloponnisian Wars as well as the rivalry between Sparta and Athens, the conquest by Alexander the Great of a vast portion of the ancient world, extending as far as India in the east, followed by the Diadochi Wars upon his death are included. Also, the mythology and culture of Ancient Greece is discussed, as is the rise of written Greek that forms the basis of the romance languages that were to emerge from it.There is a lot to digest and there were aspects of Greek history with which I, heretofore, was unfamiliar, such as how the Diadochi Wars played out. Anyone wanting to learn more about Ancient Greek history and civilization would to well to begin with this book.
