I only have one parakeet (budgie) to feed. Even though it is a 10 lb bag the price is hard to resist. So my question is can I freeze the extra?

Never tried that. My 10 pound bag tore from it not being packed well so I cannot answer for the 10 pound bag. I buy the 2 pound from the pet store and never froze it. I would worry about the thaw process they might get wet from condensation so be careful about that.

What is the shelf life?

That would be a question for ZuPreem, but I buy the big 10# bag for my Starling, and it lasts him a little over a year with no problems with this food. Great quality bird food by the way, and ZuPreem has phenomenal customer service regarding any questions you may have about any of their products. I hope that helps.
