Traditional details and dock-ready function offer the perfect boat shoe. Best known for boat shoes that have logged more miles of open ocean than any other brand, the Sperry Top-Sider story began on a raw winter day in New England. When avid sailor and hobbyist inventor Paul Sperry let his dog Prince out for his daily exercise, he noticed that the cocker spaniel was remarkably stable, even at a full run on the snow covered, icy crust. Paul raced back to his laboratory to begin working. Using pieces of rubber, a razor blade, and an ordinary sneaker, Paul had soon pieced together the prototype of the world's first boat shoe. Subsequent designs yielded the original Sperry Top-Sider now known as the Authentic Original. Since 1935, Sperry Top-Sider has been the leading brand of footwear for those who love the water. From its introduction of the world's first siped rubber outsole for non-marking traction, to its advanced technical fabrication to combat the elements, Sperry Top-Sider remains the vanguard of high-performance amphibious footwear. Available around the globe in fine independent, marine, and department stores, Sperry Top-Sider is the official footwear of the U.S. Sailing Team, Zodiac Academy, the World Billfish Series, and the Shimano Fishing Tour.

VERY Disappointed! I expected better...
Nice shoe, fits as expected and is reasonably comfortable. The reason I removed one star is that it doesn't provide a lot of arch support but I can wear it all day.Update: I'm very disappointed in this shoe after wearing it for 3 months or so. The rubber sole has separated from the leather upper - the stitches have torn out. I don't wear them everyday but maybe 3 out of 7. I've tried contacting Sperry to return and replace - but apparently they don't do that.

You can't go wrong with Sperrys
I've been buying Sperrys for a long time, as as my title states, you can't go wrong. Their quality is always top notch, and this pair is no exception. I bought this same pair in 2013 and to this date it still holds up and has never needed a cleaning or anything. The only reason I purchased new ones is because I needed a bigger size. These shoes are very comfortable, provide a tad arch support, but not much, and are very durable.I recommend to anyone who loves sperrys and to those needing some dependable boat shoes.

Nice padded design.
I usually soak my Mako Topsiders in water then let them dry while wearing, to conform them to my feet. This time however, the top edge of the "transom" of the shoe rubbed my achilles tendon into a blister, which then popped.Comparing these new ones to an older pair, I found the new pair had a higher transom, perhaps 1/4 to 1/2" taller. Somehow, that added height contributed to my blister.I expect the blisters to heal, and the shoes to ultimately be a fine addition to my shoe stable.===============October 2017OK, now I'm on my third pair of these. I've had a moderate product flaw crop up: the thread stitching the upper to the lower has come unthreaded along one side, running from about the heel to about the laces... I'm not sure whether it's a thread failure, or perhaps a hole failure: the thread is attached at the front and the back, and sort of flopping as a loop running parallel to the shoe's length.I do like this model, with its padding and its nice color. I'll plan to wear these as long as possible, and ultimately will replace them with another pair.I love this design: it has padding where I need it, and the Oak color is a favorite of mine. It's a paler brown than the product photos usually show, and it fades over time to a nice beige.----------------------------August 2016, 18 months later... I just received my third pair of these, having worn out the heel (I tend to slap my right heel when I walk)... The rest of the shoes are in fine shape, and are now my "lawn shoes" for mowing, spreading fertilizer, light shoveling, etc...This newest pair are the same design as the just-previous pair. I had worried perhaps they would rub my Achilles again. But NO, they fit just great.Any new pair of Top Siders takes a bit of time to adjust to one's feet, and these were no different. But having wet them once and worn them until dry, they are doing fine. The padding is definitely worth the upcharge compared to the stripped down model.

Comparing Sperry to Amazon's 206 boat shoe
I ordered both Amazon's 206 Boyer Boat shoe and Sperry's Top-Sider Mako boat shoe, the latter being about twice the cost. So what do you get and what do you give up. Sperry's upper leather is thicker, textured, more supple, has a padded tongue and is a more complex construction. The 206 is a thinner, stiffer, no textured leather. Sperry provides laces about twice the thickness and more flexible. Mine was a 11.5 shoe - the Sperry fit like a glove and is more comfortable and more supportive. Overall you will not be disappointed in Amazon's product given its price point, its construction appears robust, has leather upper with rubber soles , but feels stiff upon initial wearing. For me the additional cost of the Sperry is justified.

Ultimately disappointed
Purchased and wore lightly for about a month. Then all of a sudden the right shoe started popping and clicking with every step. Very annoying. I have had something similar happen before - the steel shank inside the sole had broken and the ends at the break were popping every time I flexed the shoe. Very disappointed that these did not last any time at all before failing me.

Worthless!
These immediately gave me blisters on my heels. I looked at my old pair of TopSider (I've been buying Top Siders for almost 50 years) and the padded back came down the inside and were stitched over the inside of the she leather. The Mako's (which are also Top Siders) have the leather stitched over the padding which leaves a rough leather that can (and in my case did) rubbed the heel and left me with painful, bloody blisters the first time I wore them. Terrible design. Waste of money.

Unusually high toe box interior - wish the fit was similar to other brands of the same size
I wish I could make these work but I'm estimating their toe box interior is 50% taller than that on the several sets of 11.5 narrow Sebago boat shoes I have and on the Allen Edmonds boat shoes I looked at today after these Sperry shoes arrived - it makes for a sloppy fit. I don't mind that the shoes arrived scuffed to a degree that leads me to suspect they were returned by someone else. The condition isn't that bad and I would gladly keep them if they fit more like the other brands of the same size. I find it odd that these Sperry shoes look bigger and more robust than my other boat shoes .... I found that they weigh less when I put them on a digital scale. That makes me question how durable they would be. This product will be the very first Amazon product I have returned out of hundreds purchased on Amazon.

Good but not great...
I have had quite a number of Sperrys over the years. In fact I have a pair almost identical to these, in a different color, that I bought about 6 years ago. Frankly, I ma a little disappointed in the quality of materials on these new pair. The padding is a bit thinner, the leather seems not as pliable, and overall construction quality seems to have dropped. I am hoping some of this improves with break-in, but it would be a real shame if Sperry decides to go the "Made in China" route on all its products, and cheapens the build quality. Customers like me WILL notice.

Old fashioned futility in an information age context.
The new shoe bears the same size-stamp as the old pair I'm wearing but are definitely at least one size too small in reality. There was no incremental sizes to try for evaluation and the transaction ended in a refund, and with no hope of ever attaining the particular new replacement that I had sought. These shoes are made offshore, and undoubtedly arrive by the shipping container-ful, but in this information-age environment the marvelous young lady who undertook to serve me was without any information resource support to bring to bear on the situation, for example, the possibility of my particular choice being presently "on the water" with a potential delivery date. What a disappointing outcome, given the resources invested.in this process.

Nice looking, but start to loose shape after a few weeks of use
I've been wearing Sperry Topsiders for over 30 years. Unfortunately, they are no longer being made in the USA.Although the Sperry Mako Topsider is a great looking shoe, with it's thick sturdy sole, which I prefer, my part started to loose shape after a few weeks of use. Six months in, they are starting to look cheap.Unfortunately these are no longer made to the same high standards as the Sperry of 30 years ago.

Comfortable shoe.
A very comfortable shoe. Soft leather. I usually take 10-1/2 and this was too tight, so I ordered 10-1/2 wide and it fit perfectly.
