In just a decade and half Jack Ma, a man who rose from humble beginnings and started his career as an English teacher, founded and built Alibaba into the second largest Internet company in the world. The companyโs $25 billion IPO in 2014 was the worldโs largest, valuing the company more than Facebook or Coca Cola. Alibaba today runs the e-commerce services that hundreds of millions of Chinese consumers depend on every day, providing employment and income for tens of millions more. A Rockefeller of his age, Jack has become an icon for the countryโs booming private sector, and as the face of the new, consumerist China is courted by heads of state and CEOs from around the world. Granted unprecedented access to a wealth of new material including exclusive interviews, Clark draws on his own first-hand experience of key figures integral to Alibabaโs rise to create an authoritative, compelling narrative account of how Alibaba and its charismatic creator have transformed the way that Chinese exercise their new found economic freedom, inspiring entrepreneurs around the world and infuriating others, turning the tables on the Silicon Valley giants who have tried to stand in his way. Duncan explores vital questions about the companyโs past, present, and future: How, from such unremarkable origins, did Jack Ma build Alibaba? What explains his relentless drive and his ability to outsmart his competitors? With over 80% of Chinaโs e-commerce market, how long can the company hope to maintain its dominance? As the company sets its sights on the countryโs financial and media markets, are there limits to Alibabaโs ambitions, or will the Chinese government act to curtail them? And as it set up shop from LA and San Francisco to Seattle, how will Alibaba grow its presence and investments in the US and other international markets? Clark tells Alibabaโs tale within the wider story of Chinaโs economic explosionโthe rise of the private sector and the expansion of Internet usageโthat haver powered the countryโs rise to become the worldโs second largest economy and largest Internet population, twice the size of the United States. He also explores the political and social context for these momentous changes. An expert insider with unrivaled connections, Clark has a deep understanding of Chinese business mindset. He illuminates an unlikely corporate titan as never before, and examines the key role his company has played in transforming China while increasing its power and presence worldwide.

Alibaba vs the world
I was surprised at the level of detail surrounding the birth and growth of Alibaba. It gives a true background in Jack Maโs upbringing before heading into the journey of the struggle of keeping Alibaba alive. It touches upon the Chinese government a lot, and how Jack stood out as a true leader to his employees. This book takes readers on a journey through the different levels of investment Jack raised. How his young charming self forged relationships which helped Ali Baba decades later.Iโve read a lot of business books and found this story unique. It talks about the difference in start up culture between USA vs China. The book also mentions how American companies tried to build in the Chinese market, highlighting even further the struggle Jack building Alibaba into a billion dollar company.Itโs very detailed, with a lot of names mentioned - but donโt be deterred as it is the most unique book youโll ever read. This book is about the true perseverance of one man and not getting lucky overnight.

Good read
I have been hearing Jack Ma's name pop up in the news quite frequently over the last couple of years. Who is he? What does he do to make himself become a billionaire? You will find the answer in this book. The book provides an account of how Jack Ma built up his company from scratch through strong-will and determination. There was a lot of trial and error along the way. The book provides a fascinating insight into how much change and development China has gone through over the decades. It is not a biography of Jack Ma's life, but more about how he built his company Alibaba.

Alibaba is a difficult read. It requires discipline to get to the end. For an author who claims to have worked closely with Ma there are very few real insights into how he achieved his success. Surprisingly some of the insights are extracted from public speeches made by Ma rather than from personal day by day cooperation. Is the dearth of insight due to a privacy agreement between Clarke and Ma?I finished the book feeling that I had worked hard to find out what he had done technically and financially to obtain such amazing sales. I expected more from this self proclaimed adviser to Ma.

Jack Ma magic better understood
Good insights into the modus operandi of Jack Ma and what goes on behind-the-scenes but written in a slightly fragmented and rambling fashion. Could have been better organised. But a good book, nonetheless!

A great insight into both the charismatic Jack Ma and China's economic boom.
I really appreciated the insight into Jack's Character, his optimism and the way in which his idealistic beliefs have fuelled Alibaba's success. I also gained a better understanding of the rise of the Chinese economy and how local companies such as Alibaba are better suited navigating the political and cultural landscape of China than many foreign competitors. I recommend this book for anybody who wants to know what makes Jack tick and for anybody who wants to understand the differences between tech companies in China and the West. I gave four stars because although the book is written very well and gives a wide range of understanding to Jack and Alibaba, at times I felt that it lacked a bit of direction and it seemed to finish fairly abruptly. still an amazing book and would highly recommend this book for anybody interested in the economy of the east.

Good story, love the hero tale. A little repjtive and assunptive of the reader at times, but pretty clear. Would Hve enjoyed some detail on Jack's buddhist background. .
Really enjoyable read, well explained, and patient informed author, although a little repetitive and fleeting at times. Would recommend to any entrepreneur

Fascinating read going back in time to pre-internet bubble of late 1990s, through the record breaking IPO. Jack Ma is a powerhouse entrepreneur and incredibly inspiring.

Understand the Chines economy
If you like to know how the Chines economy is functioning today this is the book for you. The author is not just explaining things about Alibaba, but all around the Chinese economy and how things are done there. There are small parts that are explaining other big Chinese IT companies that are Alibaba competition that I really liked. All is backed up by numbers. Most interesting for me was to find out a bit about the way Jack Ma thinks and makes decisions. He is a man that came from nothing in Communist China and made one of the biggest companies in the world. Definitely worth a read.
