You can gain access to the storage area by simply sliding the mattress (NOT INCLUDED!) to one side and lifting the base top which gives you the whole area inside to store your belongings. It's perfect for storing goods away for long term or the items you wouldn't need access to on a regular basis. The product is delivered boxed and therefore requires some assembly (all screws included). (SPECIAL FEATURE!) very sturdy bed, very strong, sold heavy bed. should last forever, my bed in black with crystal diamante gives my bedroom that elegant look. delivery arrived before estimated date, I highly recommend this bed. great to have storage compartment under matteress
