As fine a homage as you could ask for
In spite of the totally irrelevant (though, on its own terms, quite nice) Maxi Priest vocal track in the middle (I'm hanged if I can hear the Montgomery "slant" that Mr Ritenour claims for this version of a Bob Marley reggae song), this is a truly masterful homage to the late great Wes Montgomery, comprising a skilled and intelligent mix of Montgomery and Ritenour originals. Ritenour's new compositions are, in fact, so good that they fully measure up to those of the great WM, whilst the new arrangements of Montgomery's originals are arguably better than Montgomery did them himself (from my perspective as someone who wasn't around musically in the early 60's).On the standard issue, Melvin Davis's killer electric bass is a bit overblown, though this is largely ameliorated on the 20 Bit remastered GRP Gold issue (tricky to track down, but well worth the effort, and there seems to be another remastered edition floating about which may be as good) and overall this set is very, very good. The opening track features truly superb growling deep bass, track #3, 4 on 6, really motors, thanks to sterling support from Ronnie Foster on Hammond B-3 (you'd never know from his solo albums just how good an organ player he is, pedals and all) and an absolute tour de force of drumming from Harvey Mason, whilst other numbers such as Ocean Avenue and Road Song are pure magic. The European issue has an extra track (New York Time) tacked on the end which doesn't relate stylistically to the rest of the album, but it's okay as a freebie so I'll keep my UK copy for that reason alone. In fact, I'm not actually that great a fan of any of LR's other albums, but on this one he transcends the formulaic mediocrity of most of his other stuff. Superb ~ misses a perfect ***** rating only on account of that superfluous vocal track, without which the album's a bit on the short side.
