What a book!
The Intruders, by Louise Jensen, is a gripping psychological thriller that stands out mostly for its surprising plot twists and the way it manipulates the reader’s perception from beginning to end. The story begins with a brutal massacre at Newington House, where members of the Madley family are murdered by intruders wearing sheep masks and carrying knives, leaving only a baby alive and a disturbing message written in blood on the wall: “tell me where it is.” This opening event immediately establishes a sense of mystery and tension that runs throughout the entire narrative. Years later, we follow Cass and her boyfriend James, who accept an offer to live in the house as caretakers; an opportunity that seems perfect at first but quickly becomes unsettling. Cass, who already shows emotional fragility and signs of paranoia, begins to experience strange occurrences in the house, constantly raising doubts about what is real and what might be a product of her mind. The book’s greatest strength, however, lies in the way the author constructs its twists. The narrative alternates between past and present, revealing the story of Rose, an apparently innocent teenager whose path is directly connected to the events of the massacre. Gradually, the reader realizes that nothing is coincidental: Cass is not just a random victim, but someone deeply tied to the house’s past, and this connection becomes one of the most impactful revelations in the story. Additionally, James, who initially appears to be a trustworthy partner, proves to be an ambiguous figure, hiding information and contributing to the atmosphere of distrust and psychological manipulation. Another crucial element is the link between the present-day characters and the baby who survived the massacre, a connection that is subtly built until it gains decisive importance toward the end. When the truth finally comes to light, we discover that the massacre was not a random act, but the result of personal motives, hidden secrets, and complex relationships between the characters. This revelation completely transforms the reading experience, shifting the focus from a possible haunted house story to a disturbing human drama, where the real danger lies in people rather than the supernatural. The idea that the house has “absorbed” the trauma works more as a powerful metaphor than a literal element, reinforcing the psychological weight of the narrative. Overall, The Intruders stands out for its ability to surprise. The plot twists are well crafted, unpredictable, and at the same time coherent with the story, constantly making the reader rethink their own theories. Although the number of revelations may occasionally feel overwhelming, this also adds to the complexity and impact of the book. It is a thriller that holds your attention, challenges expectations, and delivers an ending that reshapes the entire narrative, making it clear that, in this case, the true horror lies not in the house, but in the secrets people carry.

Best read EVER!
I love books and I've read a lot but this, hands down, is the best book I have ever read!!!!!!!!!! I enjoyed every single page. I loved the complex characters. It scared the hell out of me in the beginning and then scared the hell out of me again but in a whole other way. Brilliant. This is my first Louise Jensen book and it definitely will not be the last!!!
