Very good question. Although it is not a recommended practice and does negate warranty items, consumers have installed these units outdoors. Particular attention needs to be paid to winterizing if geographic location deems, also if installed near pool or ocean, you would need to protect with a sealant compound. There is a small amount of online information on this if you care to research it, but as mentioned warranty and non-typical install is a real concern. I hope this information helps.
