On one individual file, is one side a finer grit than the other side?

Yes. The grit for this file is 120 on one side and 240 on the other. The lower the number the coarser the grit. 120 is good for shaping the nail and 240 is good to finish the nail.

Can you use the finer side to buff the top of the nail?

The grits for this file are a 120 for the dark blue and 240 for the light blue. These grits would not be advised for buffing the top of the nail. Normally buffing grits are in the 800 plus grit numbers. The reason to buff is to remove small defects to make the nail look smooth. The 240 grit will not do this it will cause visible scratches in the nail that would still need to be buffed out. The 240 grit could be used to removing the ridges in the nail. Yes the Logo is printed in the finer grit side. They are very small, but I really like them, actually easier for me to use than the longer ones.
