Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor Paint, 8ml (0.27-oz) Tube, Payne's Gray

I've been painting with watercolors off and on for about 20 years. I've tried many different brands, and most have been good to excellent. However, for consistency and value, nothing beats the Cotman line from Winsor & Newton. They have good shelf life and good transparency (for the transparent colors, that is). Good for mixing, and enough different shades to keep anyone happy. I find that a palette of Lemon Yellow Hue, Sap Green, Cerulean Blue Hue, Ultramarine, Raw Sienna, Burnt Umber, Light Red, Alzarin Crimson, Indigo, and Payne's Gray is all I need.

This was the best watercolor for fabric staining. I had tried a couple, and just not had any luck at all. I was really bummed, and decided to try one more, and this one was fantastic. If you don't know what you can do with watercolor for fabric staining - spend 10 minutes on pinterest. You won't be sad. Pros: 1) This stained fabric with no issues. I used this on my daughter's navy blue compression vest - neoprene fabric. I had absolutely no luck with getting the paint to show up and stain with previous attempts, so I decided to try this one and it worked. Her once blue vest is now fit for a princess. 2) a LOT of paint. This is a crazy good value in a tube. I love it! 3) the rose is a beautiful color. I was very pleased with it being a nice pink, but not blazing hot pink or anything crazy. 4) tube seals nicely. I used a good amount of paint, sealed the tube and came back to it a couple of weeks later. I was thrilled to find that there was no drying around the top, and no wasted paint. Cons: 1) I don't have any complaints on this one. I am not using it in a traditional sense, but for fabric staining, etc. this is an absolutely phenomenal product!

Needed this color, or maybe not, for following tutorial directions. Have not used yet. Sure it is fine paint. Took one star off because it says it contains ingredient that might cause allergic reaction to skin. So I would not say this is not non toxic & it does not have the non toxic AP symbol on it. Wish this info/ingredient was in product description. This is reason I wrote review. It was a question someone asked. Now Amazon AI should be able to answer it.

I teach watercolor painting and this is the only paint I recommend for student use. The colors are correct, the pigment works well, and the price is good. I've tried lots of other "student grade" watercolors, and this is the best in my view. Sorry to say, the colors and value of the Amazon tube paints is not good, e.g., the cobalt and cerrulean are almost identical, so don't waste money on them. But, other name brands like Sennilier do produce good student grade paints.
