Programming and Customizing the Picaxe Microcontroller 2/E (Programmable Controllers Series)

Check out the Revelation Education Picaxe manuals before you buy.
As I see many in depth reviews I will keep mine short and sweet. The book is well written and useful but the Revelation Education Picaxe manuals are more up to date and complete. I did read this book and it has a lot of good information in it but when I have a question I don't reach for it, instead I hit the RevEd manual and forum.Overall, it's not a bad book but it's hard to justify the cost given the quality of the free manual by RevEd.If you are the hands on type and you want a good Picaxe book you should check out PICAXE Microcontroller Projects for the Evil Genius by Ron Hackett. It uses projects to walk you though Picaxe hardware and software and teaches you good programming and interfacing practices that you will use everyday. You could also check out the Picaxe Project Handbook: A Guide to using PICAXE Microcontrollers series by Ken Anderson.

A rare gem packed with wide range of info and techniques
I am glad that I had this book with me while learning the PICAXE 18M2. My main interest was the serial communication and basic I/O processing and the book covers them nicely. Yes, the manufacturer's website has the most up-to-date info about the chips. But this books does wonder getting me into PICAXE quickly and smoothly. The section on interfacing with various electornics is a plus. And the advanced experiments will give us hobbyists valuable ideas. Highly recommended.

A good update
As with the first edition, this is a comprehensive overview of the picaxe micro. The section on the new M2 parts will help users understand the new arcitecture without throwing out their prior knowledge.

M2 Supplement Only
A decent book on the PICAXE family overall, but I wanted specific info on the new M2 series. Here, it is limited to a 30-page supplement tacked on to the end of the book. Not well-integrated and not as in-depth as I had hoped. Nothing you can't learn from studying the three free PICAXE manuals. 3 brief M2 experiments on DAC, touch sensors, and SR latch.

So so PIC book
I really liked this book at first but then I encountered a lot of typos. Even the code inside has to be checked and corrected. The information is good but the book needs proof checking and major corrections in structure.

The Picaxe forum is a better source of information
I thought this book would be a Bible of the Picaxe microcontroller. It turns out to be just stuff you can get on the Picaxe website. There is no mention of some of the commands the Picaxe is capable of as (an example the #macro directive).Nothing in the index about compiler directives either although there is two pages appearing to be copied from the Picaxe manual in the book. It's a book for school, to be on a desk when the teacher wants to refer to something. Saves having to go to the Picaxe online manuals. The book spends time on the school experimenter board.I expected the book to go through every command available with an example use of each one. I think it is a very expensive book for the information it contains. The Picaxe forum is a better source of information. The help file from the Picaxe free Program editor is a better source of information. The book however does show how things work and what a Picaxe chip is and the pins and does have a number of examples for you to type in as the download link did not work for me. All in all a bit of a waste of money for me.

Excellent book on the PICAXE for thinking people
This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn more about the immense possibilities that the PICAXE series of chips offer. It contains basic level stuff to get you going, but also contains lots of in-depth information that a serious user would want and need to know. Despite what others have said, I don't think you could find this level of coherent in-depth knowledge about the PICAXE's abilities online. Why bother even trying when it's all here in this wonderful book? The only thing that could improve it would be to cover the M2 chips throughout - they became available as the book was going to press and although there is a chapter on them, it would be better if the whole book was focused on them, as no-one who is starting up with the PICAXE series is going to want to know about earlier versions, and if you have some earlier versions of the chips then they are cheap enough to sell on eBay or bin them, then just buy the M2 versions with their enhanced features.
