Easy fix
Worked great, solved the problem. Had all the tools I needed. And much cheaper than a case replacement. There is an iFixit guide for those who need it.

Updated: works with WF-1000XM4 but doesn't hold charge
Update: this didn't hold charge but I have now discovered that resetting the charging case solved this problem on another replacement so that might be the solution. This is my third Amazon purchase trying to get a replacement case battery for my WF-1000XM4. One didn't charge, another charged but didn't hold charge and I thought I had hit the jackpot with this this one - sadly no. Looks identical to original battery and charges fine but doesn't hold charge for more than a day or so. Back to the drawing board.
