Honest, raw, moving
Laura Jane Grace takes us on a journey of the fear, anger, loathing and sadness that comes with reinventing your entire gender identity in a society that may be less than welcoming, and she sounds good while doing it. A deeply personal project for her, but one a lot of other trans people can identify with. The album starts strong and bouncy (at least given the theme that runs through many of the songs), before changing gear slightly half way through to breathe and offer a style change, before smoothly moving back, climaxing in a fierce musical battlecry to cap off an emotional rollercoaster of a production.Transgender musicians are few & far between, so I was delighted to find this album didn't lose focus half way through, kept to it's message, and allows room to acknowledge some of the issues other trans people face in life.Even if the theme doesn't resonate with you, Laura's talent as a singer lets this stand as it's own thing, and is an important entry into the genre of punk rock, no matter what your identity may be.

It's easy to be "right on" and give this album a five star rating more for the story behind it than the music... but the music is really frigging good. Like, there's a ton of melody and groove in this album. And the story behind the music gives it such a wealth of emotional impact, so it's all good. Great songs about important stuff. Boom. A little too slickly produced for my tastes, but meh.

"Your tells are too obvious, shoulders too broad for a girl..."
Oh wow, this is a great punk/ post-punk album and has some (what feels like) incredibly intimate songs in which Laura Jane Grace opens her heart and it's angry and frustrated but with an occasional wry smile.I'd not listened to Against Me! Before hearing LJG's interview on Marc Maron's podcast and she came across as interesting and eloquent. I was not disappointed buying this album.

One of my top 5 bands ever with a perfect release.
Laura Jane Grace must be one of the most brave women in rock to come out as transgender. And this is the perfect album to help you understand.

Renewed my faith in Punk.
This is the best Punk Rock I have heard since the 80's. Its everything Punk should be, noisy, angry, edgy and challenging. Pop punk it is not!
