I gave this book only three stars because it didn't meet my needs and the last picture shows the bridge in the "current" New York skyline with the twin towers. It made my heart skip a beat as I was reading it to my 7 year old grandson. I loved the history and engineering explanations, which I was looking for, but it was above our level. We used the pictures to understand, and I passed the book along to a 5th grade teacher friend with a warning about the ending, which requires an entire other social studies lesson if you are reading it to anyone born after 9/11.

Caissons and Cables
Don't be fooled by the size and shape of this book, or by the illustrations -- this is a "picture book" for ages 9-12, and even for adults. In fact, the text seems almost as if it's written for adults, particularly the long sentences and the sentence structure. The sentences are fully understandable, though, and they tell a magnificent story of the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. I particularly enjoyed the information on how the caissons were built and how they functioned, and the danger within. And I also loved the information on how the cables were strung. While the author does talk about the laborers (mostly Irish) who actually built the bridge, it is only in passing. I would have liked to see their story in more detail.

very disappointing, not photographs but paintings, book for kids
i was very disappointed when receiving this book, perhaps I did not do due diligence in reading the item's description, but these depictions are not photographs but apparently [oil-] paintings, and the audience is intended for kids age 9 to 12...be forwarned and seek elsewhere if you wish a studious and pictorial representation of the world's [and my fav] best bridge!!!

Illustrations not worth much....
Probably does a nice text summary of the story, but 3/4 of the illustrations really have no detail about the construction of the bridge. Two full page illustrations of the designer and his wife sitting in a room doesn't really give you much information. Half the illustrations are just of the bridge in place with no educational value. They do have about 3 diagrams of the construction methods that are good. Two are attached.

Great for OLDER kids
This book is lengthy but very informational. Worth getting for the pictures alone! The cross sections of how the bridge is anchored and how the workers went far below sea level to build the foundation are the best I've seen.Read this book before heading to New York City with the kids so they can enjoy the bridge even MORE!

This beautifully illustrated book details the construction of what was once ...
This beautifully illustrated book details the construction of what was once the tallest structure in North America. The text weaves together the engineering feat with the lives of John, Washington and Emily Roebling who brought this historic project to completion.

rooklvingyn Bridge
This book on Brooklyn Bridge might be acceptable to some people, but I was looking for actualphotographs of Brooklyn Bridge. The pictures of Brooklyn Bridge in this book just look simulated.Brooklyn Bridge has not been named the 8th wonder of the world for nothing. The pictures of BrooklynBridge in this book do not do it justice.Having lived and worked in Manhattan and had my office overlooking Brooklyn Bridge, I was lookingfor something more indepth with factual photos. The book on Brooklyn Bridge was very disappointing and I am currently arranging to return the book.
