Excellent from start to surprise finish!
The main character is interesting from the start. The story is fast-paced and believable. I love that there is no questionable language.

Can I give it 6 stars or more?
Love the Jessica Anderson series so figured I'd at least like King and Midnight. Well, like doesn't begin to cover it. Characters - excellent as always, setting - spot on, - and then there's the plot. Great, great ideas, and then a totally awesome cliffhanger. It's hard enough to wait for the next Jessica book, but now I have to wait to see what happens to King and Midnight. Highly recommend!!!!

Great News! The Dog Doesn't Die!
It's always a treat to start a new series and get engrossed in the first few pages. I always think, "Oh, boy! How many are in this series. I got to line them up now so I won't miss any."D.L. Keur hits another sweet spot in her terrific books about super dogs (just regular dogs, but they're all super, right?) and their handlers. In this series, the wounded in both body and mind, has kept his bomb dog when mustered out of the service due to injuries. Mike, nicknamed Midnight, and his wonderful friend, King, join the Sheriff's Department in a rural county. Surprised, Mike finds himself hired as the Chief Officer. His creds are just too good to pass up.Mike is not exactly social, so much of his time is spent finding his place with the diverse group in the Sheriff's office. A special pain in his side is the female Deputy Corporal, Rayne, who pretty much hates Mike at first sight. We, the readers, find out why she bears animosity toward the new Chief. Slowly, Rayne finds that Mike isn't so bad after all. The reasons why she dislikes the man and how she finds her pre-conceptions are not what Mike is all about. This first book ends on a satisfying note that will make you as enthusiastic as I am for book 2, book 3, book 4...well, you get the idea.If the general concept of the book interests you, the execution of the character building, crime solving as Mike gets his balance in this new environment for him. And you can't help but love King. Keur assures us the dog does not die, so we can rest easy on that count while following the clues leading to Mike, King, and Rayne solve the big crime.Highly recommended. Now, where's that next book?

One of the best reads
I really enjoyed this book. I stayed up until 1 am. Really well written. The characters are so realistic and so very human in thoughts and deeds. No foul language or sexual innuendos. No sleeping around or cheating on your other half. Some authors seem to find these things are the norm. I don't. I am looking forward to the next book and all that follow. I am letting my friends know about this series and giving it a 5 star rating.Thank you

Characters that are crinkly and make you want to know more
I really enjoy her other series consisting of characters about SAR dogs and people involved in investigation driven plots ....so that was my incentive to try this one. If the Jessica series is awesome then it was worth trying her new one.It is very good and has just a hint of what's next that I want to read the next one now. This has cops, bad guys, mystery and chuckles ...and did I say mystery yup it's got plenty and a sidekick dog.Co-workers ....a gang of characters that danced in my head like twinkling lights ...annoying and cute.I bet you will like this book so yes give it a try.

spoiler alert
I think this book is excellent. A lot of thorough research and great character development. No gratuitous violence, sex or obscene language. Characters aren't all "good" or all "bad" so they seem real even though most of us would not find ourselves in the middle of this plot or the subplots. I have read another series by this author, I really enjoy her writing style. And the dog is okay at the end. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series.

A very well written mystery.
This is my first read with this author and I am so glad I took a chance. The story is well written and the flow of the story was great. The author slowly revealed various information about the main chatter that kept your interest. The main character was complexed and the interaction with other key characters was perfect. I can’t wait for the next book in this series and I will be checking out the other stories this author has written.

Fine Book
No deep insights from me here. I just really enjoyed this book. A satisfying and in some ways an uplifting hope for mankind read set in the midst of a police procedural in a modern small centre police station in Arizona. A Gary Cooper High Noon main character with an ensemble supporting cast of characters I enjoyed meeting. I’ve ordered the second book in the series and am trying out the author’s other series. Oh and there’s a dog. Recommended.

Great book - hopefully going to be a series
Bought the book this morning and just finished - great book. Definitely up to the same standard as her Jessica Anderson K-9 series. The only complaint I have with Dawn Keur is that she dosen't write fast enough. I'm an unapologetic bookworm and she is on my short list of authors whose books I purchase as soon as they are published. I would highly recommend her books to anybody who likes a good mystery especially if you're a fan of working dogs with brains.

A must read
Another great series by Keur to follow. Well written book with characters and plot that develop and draw you in as you read. As with all Keurs books, couldn't put the book down and can't wait for the next one.
