Works Solid For Airsoft & Similar Hobbies
Been using the Defentac DF 9045 Dual Head IR/Vis Laser Illuminator for airsoft and Magfed paintball, and it’s been a solid option for night games. While it’s designed for recreational shooting, it works far more reliably in airsoft and paintball, where durability and usability matter more than extreme precision. It mounts easily with both M-LOK and Picatinny options, though it lacks recoil lugs—not a major issue since most airsoft replicas and paintball markers, even GBBRs, lack real recoil. The build quality stands out, feeling like civilian-use airsoft tech housed inside a real-steel shell, giving it more durability than typical airsoft-only devices while still being usable on a recreational firearm. In comparison to higher-end devices, the IR performance is decent for typical airsoft and paintball engagement distances but won’t match premium options. One notable drawback is the lack of traditional battery support—it only charges magnetically, which is convenient for quick top-ups but means you can’t swap in CR123 or 18650 batteries for extended field use.For the price, it’s a good choice for milsim players looking for a rugged, budget-friendly laser/illuminator, but the built-in battery could be a dealbreaker for those who prefer field-swappable power options. For the price tag, it rivals the performance and capability of higher quality repros from Evolution Gear, Spec Precision, Somogear, and other reputable brands, and offers similar feature sets and specs to its competition like Toughsoul, SMS and other smaller brands. For airsoft and paintball, will work as expected, for firearms you might run into some issues that Defentac R&D hasn't ironed out just yet. QC might defer from unit to unit as the reviews across the web seem to be mixed bags.

DO NOT BUY. Rattles loose after 10-30 rounds.
Completely inadequate mounting system. Torqued to spec with red loctite on a 5.56 Springfield hellion. After one 30 rounds mag the mount had jiggled visibly loose. Assumed user error, this time wet mounted it, let the loctite cure for 48 hrs. This time made it 10 rounds before it rattled off the rifle.Nice light, nice pressure switch, rendered useless by bs mount.

The mount comes loose. Magnetic charging is a joke.
I was actually surprised at how well this thing performed. The zero turrets are mushy with no clicks, but it zeroed pretty easily and held for a couple hundred rounds in one session. The IR illuminator is pretty good for what it is, the white light is better than I thought it would be, and both lasers were strong, easily visible, and didn’t get washed out by their respective illumination modes. My big problems with this thing are the integrated magnetic charging battery that nobody wants, and the mount isn’t actually part of the housing, it’s screwed on, and after the gun sat for a week, I found my zero had wandered, it will also flex when you put pressure on it.Look, China, mill the Picatinny mounting sections into the housing, and let us use 18650 batteries. I need to stress this part: the integrated battery is a huge drawback, not a positive. Momentary mode only, no strobe. Use flathead screw inserts with detente for the zero turrets like the whole rest of the industry. You’re 95% of the way there as far as what features people are looking for with these things. A few more tweaks and you’ll own a huge chunk of the market, but until you make those changes, these aren’t going to be useful for most people.

Decent package, but doesn't hold zero and has other issues
I mounted this up on a real steel deal, in Eugene S's famous round. It was shot at night, under night vision.Pros:1. White light is decent. Lots of flood, but a large defined hot spot. Definitely usable at 100yds and in, which is actually a real compliment since not a lot of cheap lights pull that off!.2. IR illuminator and pointer well-balanced. Not amazing, but enough for 100yds, maybe even 150yds. Pointer is fairly well-focused. Illuminator is floody but not overly so.3. Remote switch worked fine.4. Everything connects via MLOK. Very straightforward.5. Unit itself isn't huge, and mounts compactly. I had it on the side of my handguard.6. Switchology isn't horrible on the unit itself.7. Light to indicate IR is on.8. No flicker.9. Vis laser was OK.Cons:1. 3.5mm jack connector for the remote switch (not crane)2. Vis and IR lasers not slaved, and require hex wrench for adjustment (finicky in the dark).3. Clicking it once puts it in constant-on, which is kind of a bad design choice (I'd prefer no constant-on).4. Constant-on "stays" on even between mode selections (to include "off").5. Magnetic charging through a proprietary-ish port (don't lose the cable)6. DOES NOT HOLD ZERO. This wasn't a hard-kicking platform I had it on. Not a problem with the handguard, which was rock solid the whole time. The laser was way off when I checked it after a stage.7. Highly highly skeptical that the laser pointers were eye safe. All in all, don't buy it unless you're throwing it on like a BB gun. I don't have time in my life for MFALs that don't hold zero the first time.

Laser/strobe flashlight for rifle
Take note, this is a big unit and is for a rifle or similar, and not a handgun. With that in mind, it packs in a lot of light power in a sturdy unit. Beautifully finished with clear dial settings. Had to use the camera to capture the invisible light, of course. On the visible side, the flashlight is very bright as is the green laser. My only issue would be the double press to get the flashlight to strobe as opposed to remembering my last setting. Not a big enough deal to lose a star. Magnetic charging port is easy to use though may catch metal fragments on the contacts, so keep them clean.
