Julie Blackmon: Homegrown Hardcover – September 30, 2014

Julie Blackmon is in my opinion the best of current American photographers. Her work is so deep, so evocative of the American experience of family and home, yet, wryly humorous and threatening., Each image is so composed of carefully placed elements and backgrounds as set pieces and seemingly casually placed objects, and people, but especially children in playful acts of childhood. But there is always surprise, suspense and humor. She uses what she knows (and so clearly loves) the best, her home and family to create real and imagined single image stories. She is a true artist of the American experience and worthy inheritor of the traditions of great American photographers like Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, Cindy Sherman, Mary Ellen Mark and Sally Mann before her and like Sherman she creates rather than finds the story in the images.

This is the first time I write a review, and I started with this book because is just amazing! First, the photos are prepared with great sense of composition,beautiful color pallet, and the moments captured there are more than unique, the photography here is crafted with love. Second, because the book itself is great, the quality of the paper, the printing and the reproduction in general is 10 out of 10 (not to mention is a big book) :-). If you like photography you cannot go wrong with this book.

Got this book for Christmas to keep as my own! I've given away each one I've bought just for the kick of seeing the repsonse of the receiver. The close ups of the original shots are my fav-like a private viewing.

Loved the interview at the end! Was also really pleased to see how much my children loved this book, studying the pictures to see all the interesting little details, kids peeking around cotners, toys that showed up in several different shots, ets

A gift for my photographer daughter

I love Julie Blackmon's work and I wanted to love this book. She has made some of the best photos (in terms of the originals) I've seen in a very long time. The tragedy is printing images across the gutter (or center) of the book, which destroys the integrity of the images for the sake of making them larger. Knowing what they should look like and seeing how they look in this book, I had no choice but to return it.

I love Julie Blackmon's images and think she is an extremely interesting artist, but this book is awful. nearly every image bleeds across the gutter. you cannot see the entire image uninterrupted. this sours my buying online experience. I will not purchase another book published my Radius Books without first seeing it in person. I suggest that Ms. Blackmon find I new publisher.
