CD reissue of this 1975 album from Jazz trumpeter Don Cherry, originally titled Don Cherry. Certainly one of his best releases during the '70s, Brown Rice is an album that takes the tripped-out spacey Jazz sound he was working on, and adds some nice electric moments, with occasional slight touches of funkiness. It has a cool vibe and a tightness that only adds more to his great playing. Features guest appearances from Ricky Cherry on piano, and Frank Lowe on tenor sax. A&M.

Eastern leaning.. darkly magesterial masterpiece.
In the late 80's.. with the ink on my bachelors degree still wet... I set forth, like a many do... to Europe....with my bass...and my dreams of playing jazz in the hipster dens of the old country cities.... London was one of the first stops on my trip. I ducked into a record store..and high above the register were various "rare" collectors albums... yes.. this was back when vinyl still ruled.... And this record... was up there among them. I stood amazed... cause I had that record... in the original packaging.. among my collection.... something I either inherited from my now deceased father... or I found it during my days as a jazz dj for the campus radio station.. I might have knicked it.. actually.. I dug the cover as I recall.Upon returning.. I tossed it on my turntable.. and yes.. dark.. spinning a dark eastern leaning vibe... with wah connected to the bass violin... rich tones on the horns.. interesting.. scale patterns .. and uncommon twists and turns.... a wonderful journey through sound.. I'm not sure I'd even call it jazz.....but its definately worth listening to.

Sorry it took me this long to find this CD
I really like Don Cherry and have several of his recordings. I occasionally look to see if there is one that I don't have. A few weeks ago I ran into Brown Rice and ordered it. I'm very glad I did. This music was recorded circa 1976 and remastered in 1988. Besides Cherry, Charlie Haden, Billy Higgins, and others are present. One of the musicians is named Ricky Cherry. I know Don has a musical daughter but this may be another child or no relation. The music is terrific - It's Cherry near his best! It's the kind of music that sounds joyful and slightly disorganized but, as always, his music makes more and more sense as the tune goes on. It's never really disorganized it is just the sound of spontaneity big time. Neat ideas and neat sounds. If you like Don Cherry this is a CD for you.

Mmmmm...jazzy
I learned a lot about myself during my experience. I think I may have kids now. Don Cherry is way better of a Don than other Dons. If you know what I mean. I can sum this album up in two words, skittles baby!!!

Free But Focussed
When Don Cherry was "new," he was considered really "out there." The same held true for Ornette Coleman. Compared to some who followed them, however, they can today be characterized as relatively tame. But no matter what one's feelings are about the idiom, no one can ever say that "free jazz" must be melody free. This fine recording, characterized by power and mysticism, is proof positive of this.

Sui generis
Transitioning from free jazz to world music didn’t slow Don Cherry at all. The musicians he got for this record—especially Frank Lowe—could create great music in any context. Stands up very nicely to the test of time.

This is an amazing album that I've had since it was first issued
This is an amazing album that I've had since it was first issued. I never tire of listening to it. Every track has a different vibe yet sounds unified as a whole. I especially dig 'Chenrezig' and love the section where Cherry chants solo, the piano comes in hard and Frank Lowe takes off into the stratosphere on tenor. Brilliant!
