As described and expected

This is my favorite hymn arrangement book. Marilynn Ham captures the meaning and spirit of the hymns and creatively frames and supports them to bring out the message. This is not simply a book of hymns with each hymn predictably forced into the same one-faceted style of the arranger. Each arrangement is quite different and stands alone. I believe that hymn-playing should be about the message of the hymn - not just a beautiful song that you might notice contains the melody of a hymn. A few of these arrangements are somewhat contemporary but the majority contain purely traditional rhythms. I believe there are six completely traditional arrangements and about three somewhat contemporary ones. It is definitely worth the price of the book for the freshly creative, purely traditional, unique and fitting arrangements it contains. I also highly recommend Marilynn Ham's other books. However, the later they came out - the more contemporary arrangements they seem to contain. The nice thing is that from what I have seen the traditional arrangements are completely traditional and untainted. 'Timeless Tribute' is another of my favorites. These books are sure to contain some of your all-time favorite traditional hymns. I don't know how you could be disappointed. I would classify them as beginning advanced. They are not made difficult for the sake of showiness - just as necessary to portray the message of the hymn.If you like classical music, and would like somewhat simpler arrangements I recommend Cindy Berry's hymn arrangements. She chooses classical pieces which portray the emotion of the hymn and beautifully embellishes the hymns with the classical pieces. The hymn floats in a sea of beautiful classical music. The hymn is the focal point - not simply a behind-the-scenes presence. In my opinion, the classical pieces give emphasis to the hymns, rather than distracting from them.
