It is a great starter camera, I recomend Sigma lens 1.4 art 35mm is that I used with it. I used it for many years before I upgraded. the quality of photo will depend on your light use, camera settings lens and so on. But yes it can take a good photo.

Can this camera be used in the rain? Ranging from spitting to torrential downpour

I used this in the rain and had no problems but it was not torrential.

What is it like for astrophotography, moon, planets etc.?

Takes excellent astro photos when appropriate lens is used - 600mm for example
