The stories of Cuban refugees who journeyed across the straits of Florida in search of a better future Between April and September 1980, more than 125,000 Cuban refugees fled their homeland, seeking freedom from Fidel Castro’s dictatorship. They departed in boats from the port of Mariel and braved the dangerous 90-mile journey across the Straits of Florida. Told in the words of the immigrants themselves, the stories in Voices from Mariel offer an up-close view of this international crisis, the largest overseas mass migration in Latin American history. Former refugees describe what it was like to gather among thousands of dissidents on the grounds of the Peruvian embassy in Cuba where the movement first began. They were abused by the masses who protested them as they made their way to the Mariel harbor, before Castro permitted them to leave the country in an attempt to disperse the civil unrest. They waited interminably for boats in oppressive heat, squalor, and desperation at the crowded tent camp known as “El Mosquito.” They embarked on vessels overloaded with too many passengers and battled harrowing storms on their journeys across the open ocean. Author José Manuel García, who emigrated on the Mariel boatlift as a teenager, describes the events that led to the exodus and explains why so many Cubans wanted to leave the island. The shockingly high numbers of refugees who came through immigration centers in Key West, Miami, and other parts of the United States sent a message to the world—loud and clear—of the people’s discontent with Castro’s government and the unfulfilled promises of the Cuban Revolution. Based on the award-winning documentary of the same name, Voices from Mariel features the experiences of marielitos from all walks of life. These are stories of disappointed dreams, love for family and country, and hope for a better future. This book illuminates a powerful moment in history that will continue to be felt in Cuba and the United States for generations to come. Review: Best book I've read on the Mariel Boat Lift - Voices from Mariel is an extraordinary and deeply moving collection that brings the 1980 Mariel boatlift to life through the words of those who lived it. Instead of relying on distant historical summaries, the book lets the survivors tell their own stories—raw, intimate, and unforgettable. Each testimony adds another layer to the complex reality of the exodus, revealing not only political upheaval but also profound courage, heartbreak, and hope. What makes this book so compelling is its emotional honesty. The individuals interviewed describe the fear and uncertainty of leaving Cuba, the chaotic journey across the Florida Straits, and the challenge of starting over in a new country that didn’t always welcome them with open arms. Yet despite everything, their resilience shines through every page. The author does an exceptional job presenting these narratives with respect, clarity, and context, making the book both historically valuable and personally affecting. Whether you’re studying Cuban history, immigration, or simply interested in human stories of perseverance, Voices from Mariel is a must-read. It transforms a major historical event into something intensely personal and relatable. I walked away from this book with a deeper understanding of the Marielitos’ experiences and a renewed appreciation for the strength it takes to rebuild a life from scratch. An unforgettable, essential read. Review: A really great book! - As a person who didn't know a single thing about the Cuban Mariel Boatlift emigration, this book was an amazing read. It's not too long, but the writing allows you to be sucked into the stories of some of the victims of the event! The book is background and interview-based but the stories are so entrancing that it makes you feel as though you are watching a movie! It gives you such varied perspectives and beautifully shows the battle some of the people have gone through to still have that love and patriotism for Cuba but leave knowing that this could be a chance to be better, not only for them but also for their families! I really loved this book and the different perspectives it gave, it showed that yes a lot of average civilians left, there was also a lot of pilots, doctors, government officials and people of high status and positions who sacrificed it all to leave the oppression and life under the Cuban regime. It showed that you don't have to be on the same level to go through the same suffering and I really appreciated that in the book!

First hand accounts of the Mariel Boatlift
José Manuel García did an excellent job of portraying the Cuban boat lift from numerous people and experiences. I really enjoyed hearing all the different perspectives and stories from each individual in the novel. After reading, I feel like I have a much better understanding of the hardships some many people went through during this time period. I definitely recommend reading this, and check out the documentary too!

Very interesting!
I loved reading this book. It was very interesting to hear all about the Mariel boatlift, especially from people who experienced it first hand. Chapter 4 really stood out to me, finding all of the interviews to be so heartwarming and informative. This book is written very well and is easy to get through. I am glad that this book taught me more about what life currently is like and what it was like in Cuba, as I had no idea all of this was happening before reading about it.

Amazing overall
I really enjoyed this book, overall. I loved the chapter about the authors personal experiences, it was probably my favorite part of the book. I also thought that the retelling of Cuban - Americans stories were very inspirational; however, this section of the book started to get very repetitive, especially because at the end of each story the individual would express there 'deep gratitude' for the United States and convey how they would like to see Cuba once more in their lives. Other than this slightly repetitive part of the book, I thought that it was easily read and very intriguing. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning about historical events.

The Only Review You Need To Read
When I found out I was going to be reading this book I was like any other college student at that moment, “Why the hell am I being forced to read another book on top of all the other books I’ve been assigned this semester?” So I picked up my copy of Voices of Mariel and soon our professor assigned us the first chapter. The night I had to read that chapter I went back to my campus apartment. Grabbed a hot pocket and several alcoholic beverages for a night of reading chapters from several different books. After reading the chapters I needed to for the other books I was assigned, I finished the night with the first chapter of Voices of Mariel. Before I began I grabbed another hot pocket and another alcoholic beverage because I thought I was going to need it. However, I was wrong. Once I started reading the book I found that it was an extremely easy read. Not in any way that knocks the quality of the material. The book was genuinely interesting. To learn about the struggles that these people endured under a communist regime and the mass exodus that took place during that time was eye opening. Once I started reading this book I didn’t need a single alcoholic beverage to get me through it. That night I read more than just the first chapter. I needed up reading four and had trouble putting the book down once I was finished for the night. I applaud the author for being able to captivate the struggles these people endured and put it into a piece of literature that can educate generations to come about the pain that these people have suffered and the damage communism has caused. -Nicholas, S.

Better than I expected
I was assigned to read this book for my summer Spanish 1 course and I honestly didn't expect myself to really like this book. This book opened my eyes to a more optimistic view of those who immigrated to America during the Mariel Boat Lift! I enjoyed hearing everyone's unique tales, and I especially loved seeing the documentary afterward to get a better sense of the characters whose tales were shared in the book. The book was very easy to read and was able to understand it very well. I was also watching the documentary and i recommend it as well!
