Land on Fire: The New Reality of Wildfire in the West

The long term effects of the continued burning of North Americas timberland are outlined for the reader. If causes the reader to ponder the information given in the book long after one has read it. This is a good book.

This book is written well and contains valuable information, but from my perspective of environmental education, it feels like more like a long pamphlet on forest fires, than a book on forest fires. I wish the author work have cranked up the hard science level about 20% percent more, as their tone and style would still make the book totally readable and enjoyable. I think that I may have been over expecting on this book. There are some nice photos (Not ones that are totally needed) and the pages are thicker than average giving this more a feel of an in depth tabletop book, and if that was what I had been expecting I would have given 5 stars.

i've been so tired of hearing people tell me that climate change has no bearing on our fire seasons, i went in search of good reading material on the subject. this is a beautiful book. well thought out, precise with measured thought and consideration. i so badly want to present the book to those who would argue what this book presents, but i don't want to part with the book. it's one i will read more than once.

Really well written, easy to read style , very informative. This book brings to light the unfortunate truth of wild fire in the west.

My husband is really enjoying this book and I look forward to reading it.

Interesting. Worth reading.

i expected a detailed discussion of North American wildfire experience, how fires have been fought, and detailed discussion of suggested changes and improvements. I did not receive that. The fire discussion is very limited with little discussion of specific fires. The author touches on fire fighting techniques, but does not go into detail. He is still using the fire triangle rather than the fire pyramid and with that fails to give detailed examples of how it applies. There are few discussions of specific fires and almost no discussion of Canada despite its extensive wildfire experience. Some examples of how specific fires were handled would help the average reader to understand wildfire fire fighting which is very different from structural fire fighting. The later part of the book is devoted to environmental discussion and climate change. The author makes broad statements, but does not give specific examples. Naming specific places and discussing both good and bad policies would help the readers understand what he is advocating. Canada is largely missing from the book despite its extensive wildfire experience. I am still waiting for the good book on current wildfire practices and policies.

This has been quite the read. This year, with wildfires having been so much on our minds, in B.C. as well as other areas, this book seemed to come at just the right time. It is an eye opener about so many things regarding wild fires. It has to do with how, and when and why, anything and everything to do with, not only the fires but the fire fighters. What causes the fires, how to help prevent them, how to stop them. When and how to try and contain them and when it might be best to let them go. Whether any of us has been under an evacuation alert or has experienced an evacuation order, this book can help to explain things that previously we might have only wondered or guessed about. The book makes for so much more understanding of a subject that previously I had known so little about. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of wild fires.
