Adapted from Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel, this Emmy-winning mini-series tells the story of brothers Rudy (Peter Strauss) and Tom (Nick Nolte) Jordache. Beginning in 1945 and moving through to the 1960s, we see how the two brothers follow very different paths in life, one becoming wealthy and successful, the other facing ruin and destruction. The series also chronicles many of the most important events in the latter half of the American century, including the McCarthy witch hunts, the Korean war, the birth of the Civil Rights movement and the student riots of the 60s.

Good View
I forgot how rough this was, perhaps in the '70s we were more realistic, society has become silly and soft headed, read Ezekial forehead hard against them, fear not their facial anger, it does explain USA 1970s and the worry USA is in today so that helps, well produced for the time, made Nolte famous before his police films, that sort of character well portrayed reaching a zenith in Thin Red Line. Generally well acted as I remember that impressed me then, so it is good to read the characters again and of course the scenery is characteristic for the age. People should see this film.

Mini Series Drama at its best
What a superb piece of work. Strauss and Nolte are at their very best. Made me remember that time and how I would wait all week to see an episode with my family. Brings back some bitter sweet memories now that my own loved ones have passed on. The Falcon Eddy character played by William Smith is spot on and each time he is on the screen you worry at what may happen to the other characters. I won't spoil the ending but you will never forget it once you see this.

great memories
I bought this set for my mother to watch whilst we were on holiday on the nights I went out, well, it ended up I stayed in to watch them with her, its a series I missed when shown on tv but had read the first book. it was great to see the fashion, Las Vegas was hilarious, we both thoroughly enjoyed books 1 & 2 and its well worth it for those who remember the era. Looking out what to take on next years holiday.

Great TV mini-series from 1970's, but NO Subtitles
First part of a very good TV mini-series from mid 1970's. I used to watch it on TV every week. Good acting by all, especially Nick Nolte. Peter Strauss also very good. The movie is worth 5 stars but I gave it 3 because after I got the DVD from Amazon.UK, I found it had NO English Subtitles for "Hard of hearing" which I need, so it cut my enjoyment. All DVD movies on ALL Amazon sites, should be clearly marked "NO ENGLISH SUBTITLES" OR "ENGLISH SUBTITLES" so people will know before they buy.Would save much time and trouble for customer and Amazon if this was done. The DVD was made in 2002.Maybe it wasn't important then to have Subtitles for people with a hearing disability, but most movies have it now. For people with hearing disability, or for those who just like to read text with the movie, look for "HOH" (hard of hearing)or "close captioning" on the DVD box front or back on a close-up before you buy so you won't be disappointed.UPDATE ON SEPT.13,2011The above review I did a few months ago was for Book 1 of Richman Poor man (red box)Region 2. Book 1 DVd was made in 2002 as I said above, but somehow my Review of Book 1 was also placed in the Review area here for Richman Poor Man Book 1 and 2 combo which was released in 2010 for Region 1. My comments above are the same for the combo set (Book 1 and 2) pictured above as for Book 1 (red cover) Also, Book 1 and 2 combo have no subtitles the same as Book 1 for Region 2, sold on Amazon.uk. Hope I haven't confused things.
