Castles and treasures draw together two fine characters
I liked Once Upon a Highland Autumn. The characters are appealing and the plot interesting. This tale started off a bit slowly at first but within a few chapters the pace picks up and I was engrossed in the story. This Highland tale is about a castle and a curse and a harried Englishman and a fierce Scottish lass.Kit is an English Earl with a very overpowering family who overtake his home and he has a mother who is constantly trying to get him married. He hightails it to one of his other estates and discovers a mysterious letter in his deceased great uncle's belongings. Seems that his uncle was a Colonel and while he was stationed in Scotland, he helped out a Scottish lord and his family. Kit discovers in the letter that a castle in Scotland holds a treasure. This mightily intrigues Kit and he decides to find the castle and the treasure.Megan is an Earl's daughter and she has a secret, she is in love with a village boy who is abroad finding his fortune. Her mother expects her to make a great catch though and when they visit her aunt, Megan discovers the castle ruins and its sad history.Megan and Kit's first meeting goes terribly thanks to her mother. The two leads have an instant dislike for each other. Fortunately they are not constantly trading barbs. Away from her mother, Megan literally lets her hair down and slowly Kit finds himself somewhat enchanted with earthy funny Megan. The two both have an interest in the castle ruins but for different reasons. Kit is looking for a treasure and Megan loves to learn the tales of the highland but the castle's history just keeps drawing her and Kit to its ruins. Both leads have no desire to marry for a while (Megan is waiting for her village boy to return) but fate seems to keeps pulling them together. The two find romance in spite of themselves. They are both kind and both are trying very hard to keep their feelings in check but the reader can see that they are each other's destiny.

A very good story
I'd only read one other book by this author and I'm not sure why I haven't read more. That is definitely going to change now because of this book. Firstly let me say that I didn't read the first book in the series because it didn't get great reviews. It isn't necessary to have read it to be able to read this one. Our h is a Scottish heiress about to be taken to London for a season by her mother. To that end our h is subjected to all sorts of preparation, including having a chaperone train her out of her Scottish ways and having a new wardrobe made, amongst other things. Our h is in love with a poor, unsuitable man who has gone off to make his fortune so that he can come back and marry her. The H meanwhile is a handsome, much sought after English Earl, who escapes to the Highlands to look for a treasure that is mentioned in a letter found in his late uncle's possessions. When the H and h meet, they have a terrible first encounter where the h's grasping mother propose that the H marry her daughter. He very volubly reacts to this and offends the h. They do however then get to know each other better when the H begins looking for the treasure at a nearby ruined castle that the h loves to visit. Both of them are harassed by suitors and the h finally comes up with the idea of a handfasting to discourage interest in them both. It's to be an arrangement of convenience only and probably not legal. It leads to many unexpected complications that neither of them anticipated.I don't think I've done the plot justice as the writer really put a lot of effort into the details and although it's not perfect, it's pretty close. I really do recommend this book and I've already purchased book 1 just because I enjoyed this one so much.+++Spoilers+++I deducted a 1/2 star because of course the main characters consummated their relationship even though their future was not secure.

Once Upon a Highland Autumn
Once Upon a Highland Autumn by Lecia Cornwall is a Scottish Historical Romance set in the early 19th Century. Megan McNabb would do anything to get out of marrying a man she does not love even hand fasting for a year and a day with an English stranger.A mysterious letter draws Lord Kit Rossington to Scotland in search of a lost treasure. But the marriage-minded females he avoided in England follow him to the Highlands, and he'll do anything even a temporary marriage with a Highland lass to keep his freedom while he solves a mystery that's haunted Glen Dorian for almost a century. Legends say a curse lurks among the shattered stones of Glen Dorian Castle. Will the love that is beginning to grow between Megan and Kit be able to withstand fate? For only the living, those with bold hearts and true love, can restore peace to Glen Dorian at last. This is the first book I’ve read by Lecia Cornwall and was able to purchase it from Amazon Kindle for $1.99. It’s a sweet love story with a lot of Scottish history. I plan to buy the novel before this one, “Once Upon a Highland Summer” about Megan’s brother and the 3rd story coming out in December, “Once Upon a Highland Christmas.”

So much better than the first book - IMO
Unlike the first book, in which I HATED the "hero". I absolutely adored Kit the hero in this book.I loved this book, Megan and Kit are both likable characters. They did not fall in love at first sight or even second sight. They had an instant dislike of each other - but at the same time were physically attracted. If I had any compliant about this book it would be that I found Megan a bit fickle with her "love".I won't spoil the book for you by giving details - but there is a hand fasting, a mystery and a treasure. As well as some steamy love scenes and a HEA. There is also lost love, unrequited love and heart break. You don't have to read the first book to enjoy this book - I wish I hadn't even reading about Alec in this book annoyed me. But Kit more than makes up for him. If Alec was a quasi-hero then Kit is a mega-hero. Did I mention that I loved him?I will definitely read Alanna's book.
