Review: Brilliant prequel - Great introduction to characters that will be appearing In the game, interesting backstory with each character having the two main antagonists Blood Spider and Eco really well developed and fleshed out. The book really captures Peter Parkers struggle balancing his two lives and at times can be quite dark and doubtful Peter was going to get any kind of success. Worth reading if you are exited for the game and it will now be even more satisfying to take down the Kingpin himself Review: A Fantastic prelude to a fantastic game - Not an absolute masterpiece, but a solid effort overall. The book brings some nuance and soul to why the Websinger thinks, and acts the way that he does, with the people closest to him. Being the perfect length, the book does a Very good job of setting up the events of Spider-Man PS4, and giving the reader extra incentive and burning drive to take down the Kingpin of Crime. Those a little more familiar with the Spider-Man mythology might see a twist or two coming, and I have a sneaking suspicion this might extend into the game... but the more knowledgeable fan would have known the potential twist(s) anyways, so the point is moot. Excelsior!

Fab fab fab
I made the mistake of reading this whilst playing the game, whilst there are no spoilers it means you jump backwards and forwards in the game and book. I loved reading this and the characters are just as good as in the game. Very well written and sometimes hard to put down. You will not be disappointed with it. If you are going to play the game it’s a deffo read it first.

Great story. Can't wait for the game!!
This is a excellent story about a time when Spider-Man is no longer a young, plucky nuisance to New York's crimeworld, but has been on the scene for a long time. There a lot of nice Easter eggs sorted throughout this too, which gives the fans some nice moments, and helps to build the universe. Absolutely can't wait for the game, but this is a good story in its own right

The world Spider-Man
An ok Spider-Man story. A good introduction to the world of the gaming Spider-Man. I really do wish there was a lot more action in the book. The unravelling of a mystery style of the the book was good but a bit too slow. A couple of complaints I did have in this book. Why there was a need to rip off a Daredevil storyline and character for this book. One thing I was upset about is do author forget how strong Spider-Man is? Yes he is as lean as Fisk is massive but the strength difference between them is completely unreal. Spider-Man can lift 10 tonnes, 15 after the other storyline. It annoyes keep forgetting this and turn7ng home into a punching bag. Daredevil Vs Fisk would be a competitive fight, a fight between Fisk and Spider-Man would be the equlivent of a strong toddler fighting a strong adult in their prime. See Back in Black for how a fight between the Kingpin and Spider-Man should go. I the the game version of Spider-Man is getting his own comic now. This book is a great introduction to this world and finishes more or less where the game starts from. A lot of side characters are introduced in new roles and lives to be explored later in the game and comics.

Addictive, a must-read for anyone playing the PS4 game
I read this in the week leading up to the release of the PS4 game, and while not what I was expecting, it was an incredibly enjoyable read and had me hyped for the game. I hope they'll consider releasing more novels to expand the world of Earth-1048

Bought the game, but I decided to read this prequel before I started.
Hostile Takeover does a great job of establishing Spiderman's world and challenges of being Peter Parker. Every character feels fleshed out and a natural fit in the story. The action flows wells and the intrigue kept me hooked. Great villains and allies as you would expect and the story has a few great twists. I had to remind myself this was a set up novel.

This is one of the first prose novels I've ever read for any DC or Marvel works and I was but skeptical at first if the feel of it would be the same as is it with the comics, especially for a larger than life character such as Spider-Man. I was pleasantly surprised. The writing is really good as is the pacing. Any of you who have been following the hype train for Insomniac's much awaited PS4 exclusive would be aware that the developer has tried to spin their own unique web in their interpretation of the beloved wall crawler. This novel gives a great insight into the lore, backstory and character relationships established in Insomniac's Spider-Man. The game picks up exactly where the book leaves off and would be a great add to any superhero enthusiast's collection

Like most who read this book, I read it in anticipation for the upcoming PS4 release, since it is an official prequel novel. And while the aim of the book is to generate excitement for the game, I think it stands on its own fairly well too. One thing to note is that while the book does fill you in on a lot of the basics of the characters, if you had 0 knowledge of Spider-Man lore before reading, you might be a bit lost. This book begins 8 years into Spider-Man's adventures. He's finished high school and college, and now works while being Spider-Man. It very briefly touches on the origins, but thankfully we don't have to go through Uncle Ben dying for the umpteenth time. We see some appearances from various villains, but the main villain is Wilson Fisk, and to a lesser extent a Spider-Man copy cat. That's all I'll say there, because I don't want to give too much away. One thing that I really liked about the book is the fact that it's not completely from Spider-Man's point of view. There are quite a few chapters dedicated to Fisk and the copycat, and being able to see things from their heads really fleshed them out as characters. Don't get me wrong, they're still villains through and through. But this aspect at least helps you understand and empathize with them ever so slightly instead of "hey I'm a villain doing villainy things because I'm the villain". As I mentioned before, the obvious intent of this book is to generate hype for the upcoming game, which I feel it does very well. It gives us a great introduction to characters like Peter, MJ and Fisk and sets up a lot of exciting things. That being said, I do feel that it being a prequel to the game does also hurt it a little bit. Allegedly the game picks up right where the novel ends, and I think it ends in a very blatant "you'll have to buy the game to see what happens next!" type of way. There's a "plot" between some characters that is hinted at a few times but is never resolved, so you know that it will come up in the game. Also, while we get some great "screen time" for characters like Peter and Fisk, there are some characters that only get a page or two in the whole book and you wonder why they're even mentioned at all. This includes characters like Aunt May, or Harry Osborn. I feel that they're mentioned because they'll have a part to play in the game, but in the novel they serve almost no purpose. Is the book perfect? No. Is the book there to sell copies of the game? As mentioned plenty of times, yes. But despite its issues, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and would highly recommend it, especially only at ~$6. While it's an obvious set up, it does have a satisfying enough story on its own and if you're any sort of Spider-Man I'd definitely recommend giving it a shot.
