Please, Tell me WHY?
Finally! A super sharp grater that shreds cheese perfectly for cheese dip!! In the past, I've resorted to buying bags of pre-shredded cheese in order to get the thicker shredded texture needed for many recipes, sacrificing the quality and creative flavor combinations that are available when you grate your own cheeses. I love course shredded cheese...after all, who puts fluffy cheese on a pizza? So, who get's FIVE STAR excited over a grater? Well, I do. Although I love making things from "scratch", as I get older, I find that many of my kitchen tools are becoming harder and harder to use, and at the moment, I have two (yep, two) broken wrists that required surgery and millions of shiny metal parts to fix. Both wrists are on the mend, but needless to say, both of my hands are very weak and both have very limited movement,, and at my advanced level of maturity, my doctors have told me to expect arthritis in both hands, and not to expect to ever regain full use and strength in either... So...I get really excited whenever I find something that makes my life easier. This thing is so easy for me to use! It is perfectly balanced, the handle is just the right width and it is long enough and the rubberized foot at the end helps to hold the grater still, and at the perfect angle so that it does not slip and slide all over the cutting board like my big, clunky old box grater did. And it's easier to clean, too. Some folks have complained about the sticky label on the back of the Microplane Professional Extra Course Grater (Wow! It took longer for me to type that than it did for me to grab my little bottle of Goo-Gone and clean the sticky residue off of the grater), but I found that peeling it slowly only left tiny goo-dots that wiped off easily with Goo-Gone, another one of those products that no home should be without. Since I have never owned a non-professional, Home Series Microplane grater, I can't compare the two to tell you which one I like better, I can. however, tell you that this style is easier to use than the Microplane Classic design grater (the long skinny one), although I do like the rubberized handle on my Microplane Classic a little better than the stainless. With my week hands, t's easier to hold on to than the stainless steel handle. I have no idea if the "professional" is any sharper than the Classic, or the Home series graters, I do know that the design of this grater is what sets it apart from all of the others. There is little to no cost difference between the Home series and the Professional, but there is a wold of difference in the ease of use. The secret is the foot on the bottom of the Professional grater. Definitely go Pro! Now, putting all of the praise aside, I have but one question for the makers of the Microplane Professional Graters that I am sure is weighing heavily on the minds of all who have ever purchased this product: Three holes? Why on earth is there a single small hole in only THREE of the four corners of this thing? Do your produce engineers not realize that things like this make people like me CRAZY? but...since the rest of the product is so darned nice, I guess I can live with the three hole thing...I just want you to tell me WHY?

The microplane is really great. I've used at least 10 different graters over ...
The microplane is really great. I've used at least 10 different graters over the last three years and this is, beyond a doubt, the best of all of them. It's very well-made and seems like it will last for a few years and it is a joy to use. Love the grater. BUT, whichever department decided to use the laminated paper labels and the industrial strength glue to glue huge laminated paper shields to both the grater cover (which is really awesome, and I didn't mention is above. The grater cover is awesome so it keeps the super sharp, easy to grate cheese side safe in the drawer) but, back to my diatribe...You had to glue it to the cover and to the grater itself? really? So, I got it and soaked the parts and of course only part of the paper came off and none of the glue, so I had to keep the pieces laying next to my sink for 5 days until my day off when I could search the garage for the goo-off --which dries my cuticles and makes painful skin cracks in the winter, of course, but anyway...So I had the super nice grater and grater cover lying by my sink for 5 days, which made me feel crappy every time I looked at them..Then, on my day off I start using the goo-off and finally get the label off the cover and I'm glad to know that at least it's not the type of plastic that melts when you apply the goo-off to get the impossible to remove label off...So we've got that going for us... Then I get to the label that is stuck ONTO the grater which is much, much harder to remove than the label that is stuck on the grater cover because of course, everything that I put the goo-off on and then scrub the grater with disintegrates. Because it's a grater. And I am trying to be so careful not to tear my fingers up and I even think that I should dig around and find that metal glove that I use for the mandoline, but I know that will take at least 30 minutes and I don't want to face the fact that maybe I can't find the glove and WHY is this so hard? So I still don't have all the glue off the grater. I'm going to boil some water and put the grater in it to melt down the glue and then try to goo-off again. I do like the grater a lot and it's awesome that I can put it into boiling water. I'm going to give it 5 stars but I hope somebody in that company reads this review and does something about those labels because I am not at all happy about the amount of effort it is taking to remove them.

Good Grater - Does the Job
I am over the bulky tent graters that are a pain to clean and to store so I thought I would try these. After reading the reviews I settled on this one. I just wanted a basic grater one that will shred to the size of store bought shredded cheese. I am trying to get away from all of this processed food (but I love cheese) so I will just start shredding my own from store bought blocks (which saves money too). I love the rubber end tip that helps stabilize this shredder and prevents it from slipping. I am just using this so far to shred basic cheese like swiss (picture), cheddar or mozz. So far so good! It shreds the cheese very well and very easily. It is easy to clean up by hand - but be careful as it will shred your sponge and your finger tips. It is easy to store right in my silverware drawer. And the plastic cover is nice to have for safe keeping. I have used it for a few months now and it hasn't dulled at all. Note that others have said about the sticky remnants from the sticker. Yes - mine has this too and it's a big pain and a big disappointment Not sure why they haven't either switched glue types or location of the sticker. I have rubbed vinegar on it and each time I wash this I try to get off more of the residue. Still gets 5 stars b/c it is a great grater so far. I know I rely heavily on reviews. Please acknowledge if you found this review helpful Thank you.

Great Grater
If you think all cheese graters are alike, think again. We grate a lot of cheese in my house (for nachos, enchiladas, lasagne, and more). As a result we have tried many cheese graters. Box graters provide stability, but are difficult to clean. Flat graters are easy to clean, but are flimsy and often warp or crack. The search is over. The microplane professional extra coarse grater is perfect. The "extra coarse" size is about the same size as the holes on a "normal" cheese grater. It works wonderfully for shredding mozzarella, jack, swiss, and cheddar cheeses as well as for shredding hard fruits and veggies like carrots, potatoes, or apples. The handle is easy and comfortable to grip. There is a little rubber grip on the bottom to keep it from slipping if you prop it up while grating. It is super sharp, so it grates things very easily (even after 7 months of use, this is still true). It comes with a cover so you won't accidentally cut yourself on it when you store it. (Use the cover! It easy to get on and off, and this grater can and will cut you if you aren't suitably cautious. Being sharp makes it a good grater. ) It is very easy to wash (dry it with the handle pointing down to make sure water doesn't get trapped inside of it). I highly recommend this grater.

This is a very nice grater but I too had that awful sticker on ...
This is a very nice grater but I too had that awful sticker on the back that so many others have complained about. This is what I did. I peeled off what I could of the sticker and then I rubbed canola oil all over the remaining sticker and residue and let it sit for a couple of hours. I then used a hair dryer on high for a couple of minutes and the rest of the white sticker came off but the residue remained. Be careful, the metal will be hot. I then used the green side of a scotch bright pad to scrub it but that wasn't really doing the job. I keep Mr. Clean magic erase sponges on hand at all times because they are great for so many things. They don't last very long but are great for removing a multitude of things. So, I had one that had seen better times and decided to give it a try. You need to use a little elbow grease and really scrub back and forth but it removes it and the grater is like nothing was ever stuck to it. Like I said, the magic sponges don't last very long to begin with and the grater will tear it apart so be careful of your fingers when it starts to wear down but it works like a charm. I think it's a good alternative if you don't want to use chemical based cleaners or you don't have any on hand.

Essential tool, highly recommended!
This is really a terrific grater. It does the work of my standard box grater quite a bit faster and with less effort, plus it's a breeze to clean. The "extra coarse" version seems to produce grated cheese about as coarse as the coarsest side of the box grater, which is fine for my grating needs. I'm glad I purchased the Professional version for the reasons cited by a previous reviewer, although I now see Amazon has added a "non-professional" version that includes a safety cover. I don't think that was available six weeks ago. I still think the extra $2.50 is worth the more professional handle. It's so sharp that it even grates mozzarella without the cheese turning into a mushy substance that has to be cleaned off frequently while grating. As others have said about various Microplane graters in Amazon reviews, they're sharp! This isn't a criticism, but a caveat to be very careful. First thing I grated after unpacking it was my forefinger. It was a minor scrape but a real warning to be much more careful than when using my old graters. Since then, I've used it with no mishaps because I know to not even barely touch it in the grating direction. I see Amazon is using different suppliers for various Microplanes, but Amazon's current supplier for this version, Witbecks, was as good as online ordering gets. Fast, well-packaged, good communication.

much better than the plastic frame!
I have purchased a number of Microplane products, some of which are great, some of which are disappointing. This one seems pretty good! The frame is nice and sturdy (unlike the plastic-frame products) and the handle is solid. The item pictured/described is slightly different than what I received. The description states that the protective cover is black, mine is clear. (The rubberized grip at the end of the grater is black, but that's not a protective cover.) Also, the handle on mine has a slight ergonomic curve to it that is not present in the pictured item. It bends towards the user so that when you use it head down, resting on the rubber grip, it's at a better angle than if the handle was straight like the photo. Search Amazon for other Microplane Professional products and you'll see what I mean. (This also helps a little in keeping your handle hand out of the way of the stuff you are trying to grate.) The worst thing I can describe as a "con" is that the label is stuck onto the cover with an adhesive that is difficult to remove without some kind of oily assistance. Make sure you find something that doesn't damage plastic. Hey, Microplane... there are less permanent adhesives for kitchen product labels! Oh, and there were a couple of tiny, very sharp plastic nubs on the inside of the cover where there is a sort of seam, probably leftover from the manufacturing process. I mashed it around with the back of a spoon and it smoothed out. I intend to update my review after using it for a while. EDIT: OK, it took me a while to come back. It's been an excellent grater so it got it's fifth star (so much better than the cheaper version), but I do recommend that you use a cut-resistant glove. I usually end up grating my fingers or nails ever-so-slightly.

Love this grater
Love this grater! It is very sturdy and well built and seems durable enough to last a lifetime. I had been using a box grater, which was not as sharp as this one and was a pain to clean by hand (so always had to go in the dishwasher). This grater has been a breeze to clean by hand, which I enjoy, because it's always ready for use and not sitting in the dishwasher waiting for a full load. This grater makes short work of the cheeses I've used it on so far (various block cheeses), and I enjoy the wide shavings. The rubberized end is convenient to set onto the counter to stabilize it, or, if I just need a little bit, I'll grate right over the dish freehand. Highly recommend this grater for anyone looking to move away from bagged shredded cheese. It works so quickly and easily, stores compactly, and cleans easily enough that it is easy to make the switch to buying and using blocks of cheese instead of pre-shredded bags.
