I don't know of any drop elbow fittings that aren't female, therefore you DO need a nipple to connect this UNLESS you have found another non standard method like a male adapter. The depth of your drop elbow from the finished wall dictates the nipple length. A drop elbow is used because it can be screwed to a backing allowing the nipple to be tightened without the pipe twisting or turning.

Is there a Starlight Chrome Grohe version in metal?

no, only plastic, but good quality I reckon. I had doubt, but it holds its shape and coating amazingly well (about 9 years long now)
