Josh Cohen -- Radiohead for Solo Piano II

Criminal there's no reviews for this book yet! This book is incredible, while the songs in it may not be as popular as the ones in the first book, I prefer this one. I enjoy that the songs are written a little less literally than the first book. While they are still accurate translations, I feel like there is more room for improvisation. Good example of this is the solo section of Man Of War, while it is explicitly written the same as the YouTube cover, you can much more easily use the chords to make something your own as opposed to say, the solo sections in Paranoid Android from the first book (still possible, but I found it easier to get stuck trying to decipher each and every note instead of just making my own solo from the chords). I'll always love these books for introducing me to a new style of playing that is slowly moving away from needing sheet music to play a song. I grew up only ever learning how to read sheet music and have only started to dive into theory/improv in the last two years or so. I am proficient at playing sheet music, but these books will challenge you in a different way. They invite you to play by feel rather than by what you see. They've been great teachers for me to focus on chords and building upon those with unique rhythms. Absolutely recommend these books for anyone that loves Radiohead or wants to learn a unique style of playing not often taught in traditional books. I love Josh Cohen’s arrangements - they capture the original, yet let the piano shine. If you’re looking for something that actually sounds like Radiohead, his books are winners. He thoughtfully gets the harmonies and recreates the effects in some songs. They’re either late intermediate or early advanced level, I’d say.
